#Trending In The World Of Comics: 12/21/12-12/27/12

In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, tv shows, video games, etc. I’ll also give a shout-out to some favourite comic blog entries and have a social media section involving Twitter. This week’s edition is a little light due to the holidays and not much happening because of them. Let’s begin:

Batgirl Gets New Writer

The news first broke on the 21st on Simone’s Twitter account: “Here’s a thing. Gail Simone is the new Batgirl writer. 🙂 I am driving a snow road, cell is about to cut out, but THANK YOU DC for this privilege and THANK YOU everyone who wanted this to happen! Also? NOT A HOAX. Dudes. I KNOW. #headExplodes”. This makes me happy beyond words and was surely an early Christmas present from DC. I hope they’ve learned their lesson from this whole debacle…

Walking Dead Renewed But A Casuality Emerges

The Walking Dead was renewed for Season 4 (what took them so long?) but with the good comes the bad: Glen Mazzara will no longer be the showrunner. The press release from AMC reads: “AMC also jointly announces with Glen Mazzara today that for future seasons, the two parties have mutually decided to part ways. Glen guided the series creatively for seasons 2 and 3. AMC is grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success. Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer.” The show looks for its’ third showrunner to start its’ fourth season a statistic that is both shocking and saddening at the same time. I felt that Mazzara did an excellent job and succeeded in ratcheting up the action on the show. Who will be future ex-showrunner #3? Your guess is as good as mine.

WildCATS Return

Rumors are swirling that in 2014 Jim Lee will return to a newly relaunched WildCATS book after his Man of Steel run with Snyder concludes. I for one am completely clueless about all things WildCATS and can only name one of the characters featured in the image above (Grifter). Can’t believe we’re already talking about where Lee is headed after Man of Steel considering the first issue hasn’t even been solicited yet.

  1. When Jim Lee stopped drawing the Justice League, some bloggers wrote he was about to relaunch WildC.A.T.S.. At that time, I wrote this comment:
“Jim Lee left the Justice League, and a lot of bloggers think it’s because he’s going to work on an old series DC is planning to relaunch, WildC.A.T.S.. As you probably know, it was him who created this series, exactly 20 years ago.
If you have an A-list artist, you give him an A-list series: WildC.A.T.S. would be a C-list one, so, in a normal situation, Jim Lee working on it is pure nonsense.
But maybe in this case Jim Lee sticked obstinately to this project because he wants to bring his old series back to life, and DC decided to indulge his whim because otherwise their working relationship would have gone really uptight, and it would have ended as soon as possible. Jim Lee on a C-list title is better than Jim Lee on a Marvel title, DC thought.
I hope Jim Lee won’t write WildC.A.T.S.: he’s an awesome penciller and he’s very skilled with creating characters (think about Grifter, for example), but his 90s stories were boring as all hell. Since then he always worked with the most talented writers, so maybe he learned something from them and got better, but I don’t think so: writing well is a talent, not a technique, so you can’t learn it from anybody, no matter how good your teacher is. Good writers are born, not made.
But maybe all this hype about Jim Lee working on WildC.A.T.S. will be proved wrong: perhaps Jim Lee doesn’t want to slip back (especially now that he’s at the top of his career), no matter how fond he is of WildC.A.T.S., and perhaps DC never thought to bring WildC.A.T.S. back to life. Only time will tell.”
The hype about Jim Lee working on WildC.A.T.S. has been proved wrong, but the bloggers who started this nonsense are too proud to recognize it was a big fat lie, so now they are clutching at straws, and saying “I swear the news was true, the project has just been postponed.” How pathetic they are.
When you get caught, the best thing you can do is apologize and recognize you were wrong. That’s the only way you can (partly) save your face. On the contrary, if you clutch at straws, you only dig your own grave even deeper.
Don’t believe this news, it’s pure invention.

I agree. Lee would be better off moving to another title (a return to Batman in the Detective Comics series?) if he tires of drawing Man of Steel.

“Don’t believe this news, it’s pure invention.”
Normally I wouldn’t even bother posting it but this week was a slow one and I saw it on Bleeding Cool (who are pretty reliable). Things change all the time (look at the debacle of Batgirl for instance) so maybe currently that’s on the books but after Man of Steel who knows what will truly happen?

      • I’m 100 % sure that things went exactly the way I described you. When Jim Lee left the Justice League, the hype about WildC.A.T.S. started; then it went out that Jim Lee had taken that decision for Man of Steel, and not for WildC.A.T.S., and since then the bloggers who started that hype have been clutching at straws.

        • You’re probably right. All it takes is one person to start it and then it goes on and on and on and on…until it creates a life of its’ own. If that’s true I’m surprised a site like Bleeding Cool would report it without a legitimate source in the know.

  2. I was quite shocked at how DC teated Gail Simone, so glad they took notice of how upset everyone was about this, and put her back on Batgirl right away. I’m like you, I have never followed the Wildcats either, so maybe this will be a good chance to try something new. It was great to hear that The Walking Dead was renewed for another season, but think its a shame that Glen Mazzara is leaving as showrunner. I think he has done a gret job with season 3, its been the best one yet. Fingers crossed everything turns out ok, I’d also like to say a big thank you for including me and my blog in your trending section, cheers & all the best for 2013!

That was a pretty sad state of affairs for them and they tried to save face as best as possible. Hope they gave a stern talking to the editor that “fired” her by e-mail.

“I think he has done a great job with season 3, its been the best one yet.”
For sure. Ever since the second half of season 2 the show has been running on all cylinders and Mazzara is a big part of that. I wonder what they were disagreeing about?

“I’d also like to say a big thank you for including me and my blog in your trending section, cheers & all the best for 2013!”
All the best for 2013 as well. May it be the best one yet!

  3. I’ve never read WildCATS. I know fans will pick it up for Lee’s artwork but I’ve got to assume it’s ultimate success will also be due to whoever they put on to write the book. I’ve always assumed WildCATS was more like an espionage book with superheroes. If I’m correct in that assumption I think this could work well if it’s done up like the last two Mission Impossibles were done.

If I’m incorrect, what kind of book has this been traditionally and does anyone have an idea as to how it will fit in with the rest of the DCU?

BTW, I really enjoyed this post, it’s great to know who else is out here on WordPress and the articles were really interesting. Thanks GothamRogue!

    • “If I’m incorrect, what kind of book has this been traditionally and does anyone have an idea as to how it will fit in with the rest of the DCU?”

DC Comics already has a superhero/espionage book in the form of Team 7 so going that route would be a little redundant. I looked up on Wikipedia about past WildCATS series and this is what they had to say:

“Launched as an original Image comic book title by popular X-Men penciler Jim Lee and his friend, writer Brandon Choi, the comic book’s premise revolved around the centuries long war between aliens called Kherubim and Daemonites.”

“After the first series cancellation, WildStorm, now an imprint of DC Comics, resurrected the Wildcats under a whole different premise – Wildcats dealt with the lives of the original members after the team’s breakup following a botched mission during which team member Zealot apparently died.”

“The third series, Wildcats Version 3.0, was a part of the mature readers’ Eye of the Storm imprint, dealing with Spartan’s (now Jack Marlowe) agenda to better the world by proliferating advanced technology and power sources throughout the world via the HALO Corporation.”

“In 2006, as part of the “Worldstorm” line-wide event, the title was restarted, written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Jim Lee. The team consisted of Spartan, Mr. Majestic, Zealot, Grifter, Voodoo, Savant, and Ladytron. Warblade is on a secret mission, and Maul has retired to his civilian identity. Kaizen Gamorra returned as villain, aided by the WildCats’ first enemy, Helspont. However, the title was permanently put on hold after only one issue.”

“Fifth Volume: The WildCats failed to stop Armageddon, and now they’re barely able to save the few humans who survived, trapped in Los Angeles. Former allies have forsaken them. Past loves have abandoned them. They must learn to stand together–because their old foes have NOT forgotten…or forgiven!”

If Lee does return it would sell off his art alone until he leaves and then it will take the inevitable nosedive. A lot of these characters have popped up elsewhere in the New 52 and I think spreading them out over the various DC books is the way to go for now until the demand is at an all-time high.

“BTW, I really enjoyed this post, it’s great to know who else is out here on WordPress and the articles were really interesting. Thanks GothamRogue!”
