Coming Attractions 01/09/13

In this feature I’ll highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most. This week I also debut the slightly tweaked format of this feature going forward:

Animal Man #16
Animal Man #16
Creative Team
Jeff Lemire and Steve Pugh
Solicitation
“ROTWORLD: THE RED KINGDOM part four! Animal Man has Constantine, Steel, Black Orchid, Beast Boy, Frankenstein and a whole army of patchwork men and women at his back – but is that enough to go up against Anton Arcane at the heart of the Rot? Team Red sets off for Metropolis to recruit a powerful new ally!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
After last issue’s surprise reveal, my anticipation level has risen to see where they go from here. Who is this Green Lantern? Is he one of the regulars? Is he an all-new character? One thing is for certain: Rotoworld only has this issue and #17 left to resolve it. I expect an excellent sprint to the finish and this is the starting point.

Avengers Arena #3
Avengers Arena #3
Creative Team
Dennis Hopeless and Kev Walker
Solicitation
“X-23 vs. ANNIHILATION’s Cammi! A mystery opponent vs. AVENGERS ACADEMY’s Sentinel! Who is the killer stalking the competitors in their sleep? Plus: Darkhawk equals death!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Avengers Arena is a mixed bag. I love the characters and even some of the new ones I have fallen in love with pretty quickly but that looming presence of death which is this series’ trademark hangs over it every issue. I look forward to every issue to see if my favourites still survive and dread the results at the same time. See my point? Mixed Bag it is…

Doctor Who #4
dw cover
Creative Team
Brandon Seifert and Philip Bond
Solicitation

“The second issue in a special two-part story featuring the art of Philip Bond! With the Doctor and Rory on a boys night out gone wrong, Amy must face the Silence on her own! All that plus lots of beer!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Last issue simply nailed it and this issue looks to be sadly the conclusion of the story already. I wouldn’t mind if this creative team had lasted a while longer but I’ll enjoy them while I can. Come back Seifert and Bond! Come back!

Smallville Season 11 #9
Smallville Season 11 #9
Creative Team
Bryan Q. Miller and Jorge Jimenez
Solicitation
“An old friend returns to the series with a new look. What terrible secret is he carrying? o Superman must help Bart to solve a mystery inside the Speed Force. The secret of ‘Earth Two’ Chloe is revealed.
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Okay, so we got the return of Bart Allen, the debut of the Speed Force, and the mystery of Earth 2 Chloe revealed? What more could you ask for? Add that to Miller’s excellent dialogue and we are sure to get one enjoyable read.

Superior Spider-Man #1

Creative Team

Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman
Solicitation
“THEN!…Peter Parker spent a lifetime living up to the responsibilities his powers foisted upon him but his Amazing story finally ended dramatically in the historic Spider-Man #700. NOW!…The new Amazing Spider-Man has arrived and he is better in every single way. Smarter, stronger…Superior.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Despite all the controversy, despite all the outcries, it’s time for the Superior Spider-Man age to begin. This first issue will set the tone for what we can expect going forward and will be the make it or break it for this book. You have fans that are ready to swear off this series, so you better come out swinging and hold nothing back in this debut issue, Mr. Slott. The book that I’m looking forward to the most by far.
