In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, tv shows, video games, etc. I’ll also give a shout-out to some favourite comic blog entries and have a social media section involving Twitter. Let’s begin:
Arrow/Amazon: CW Network NewsThe CW Network’s potential new show Amazon has a frontrunner for the lead character of Wonder Woman, actress Amy Manson. Her previous credits include Being Human (UK Version), Torchwood, and Misfits. Never seen this Scottish born actress before but she has already made it through two audition rounds. CW’s President revealed that while Batman will never appear on Arrow (he’s off-limits), he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Wonder Woman and Green Arrow potentially crossing over into each other’s shows.
Detective Comics #900?April’s issue of Detective Comics would have been the 900th one if the New 52 hadn’t messed with the numbering but instead of reverting to #900, DC will stay the course and keep it at #19. Don’t worry though as they’ll still honor the moment with an 80-page spectacular that month in celebration. I’m not too concerned that they refused to revert the numbering considering it isn’t until Detective Comics #927 that the character of Batman would be celebrating 900 issues since he didn’t debut until Issue #27. Maybe by that time (Issue #46 of New 52 numbering) they’ll be more inclined?
Three interesting tidbits surfaced this week. The first one is that Grant Morrison’s run on Action Comics is extending by one issue in order to better wrap-up his story. Excellent news indeed and hopefully this will let his ending breathe a bit more instead of trying to cram all these zany ideas into such a small space. Second bit of news was DC confirming that in April all the New 52 books would feature gatefold covers. As Bob Harras explains: “It is part of, as we explained earlier, the theme of game-changing, upping the stakes for our heroes. This was a way to accentuate that threat or shocking moments in our heroes’ lives. What we’re doing with the covers is thematically linked to that. They will be page-fold covers; the covers will tell you a story. There will be an image that will crack the page fold, and as you open up the cover, you’ll say, ‘Oh, wow!'”. Or as Bobbie Chase puts it: “You might even say, ‘What the F?'”. Supposedly, the covers came first and then the creative teams were asked to write the comic to go with it. Interesting concept that should provide some stellar covers! The final piece of news was the revelation that five years ago Dan Didio offered Mark Waid the Editor-In-Chief job at DC Comics.Unfortunately it fell through, but could you imagine what the DC landscape would have looked like if Waid was in charge?
Marvel NewsTwo revelations from Marvel this week. The first one was the announcement of a new X-Men series. This one will feature an all-female cast and its’ cast will consist of Storm, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Rachel and Psylocke with Jubilee in the lead role. Hopefully Jubilee is no longer a vampire and has her powers back. Also, why didn’t they call this book X-Women? The second revelation is that Marvel is actively trying to develop a Heroes For Hire movie starring Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Jeph Loeb dropped this bit of info and we can add it to the long line of projects that Marvel has in the pipeline.
Walking Dead ShowrunnerLast but not least, AMC’s The Walking Dead has found its’ next showrunner. The lucky winner was Scott M. Gimple who has been a writer on the show since the second season. Apparently, he shares credit in the screenplay of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance but I won’t hold that against him no matter how bad that movie was. Anyone want to take bets how long this latest showruuner lasts?
