#Trending In The World Of Comics: 01/18/13-01/24/13

In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, TV shows, video games, etc. I’ll also give a shout-out to some favourite comic blog entries and have a social media section involving Twitter. Let’s begin:

Jenny Olsen?

As news continues to trickle out on The Man of Steel, two thoughts have been at the back of my mind: will we see Lex Luthor and who is playing Jimmy Olsen? I can see all the secrecy over Luthor as he’ll probably only amount to a cameo but why haven’t we seen Jimmy yet? And then came the news this week. It’s far from official but Warner Brothers refuses to comment and the evidence is starting to trickle in with the rumored actress being…Rebecca Buller. That’s right Superman’s Pal is rumored to become Superman’s Gal. Jimmy Olsen is no more, say hello to Jenny Olsen. I ask you…why? Why did they need to do this? Why take an iconic character like Jimmy Olsen and make him a female? What’s next? Is Lex Luthor actually Alexandra Luthor? If this turns out to be true…

Guardians of the Galaxystar-lord 2Another week means more Guardians of the Galaxy casting rumors. First off, Marvel appears to be inquiring about the availability of Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. Yes, that’s right. Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. The leading theory is that they could potentially provide the voices for the two all-CGI members of the Guardians, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Never thought we’d see these two actors linked with a Marvel movie but if it pulls through it would be some inspired casting. Secondly the search continues for Star-Lord. The latest three actors that read for the part were Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games, Ghost Rider), Cam Gigandet (Priest), and Chris Lowell (Veronica Mars). Wonder when we’ll start hearing casting for the other Guardians of the Galaxy?

Black Canary’s Mom471492-riverThis week the news broke that Laurel Lance (Black Canary) would be visited by her mother in an upcoming episode. Turns out that episode is going to be at least three episodes and that the actress playing her is Alex Kingston (River Song from Doctor Who fame). She’s apparently returning “to Starling City to make amends with her family and find closure in the tragic death of her other daughter”. The possibilities are endless. Why did she leave? Was it to protect her family from her life of crime fighting? We know that in the comics Black Canary’s Mom was the original Black Canary before her daughter took up the mantle. Are they going to go this route? Will she team-up with Arrow? Am I reading too much into this? Regardless, phenomenal actress that will most assuredly do a perfect job.

New Batman Movie Delayeddc27The next solo Batman movie has reportedly been pushed back to 2017. They want to debut the new actor playing Batman in the Justice League movie before spinning him off into his own series. Someone needs to straighten DC out as the reason Marvel’s Avengers worked so well is you were already invested in their characters due to their solo movies. DC wants to cut corners and start with the team-up movie first which I feel is a big mistake. No Batman until 2017 is too long for me!

Ed BenesBatgirl-16I’ve loved the job Ed Benes has been doing on Batgirl and this week came the news that he would be leaving the title. Actually that’s not right, Ed Benes will be leaving comics entirely for a year or two. He made this statement on his Facebook Page: “Hi guys, today I am using this space for, to warn you that I’m away from comics for a while, maybe a year or two I do not know, the fact is that this was something I’ve wanted to do since the time of the JLA, I’m warning you here because almost all my contacts are here, and it’s clear that the plan to form a team to work with me will have to wait, I’m sorry about that, but I’ve been living under pressure for a long time and I need time to rest a bit. This does not mean that I will stop drawing because that’s what I know how to do.” I’m sad at the news, but hopefully when he’s ready he’ll come back recharged and even better than he was before.

  1. When the 90s began, Jim Carrey and Robin Williams were the most popular comedy actors. Then both of them tried to make some serious roles, and this determined their fail: their fans felt betrayed and stopped supporting them. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”: if you are successful as a comedy actor, keep doing comedies, because that’s what you’re born to do.
Another risky choice is the one Ed Benes made. I remember that a hugely talented Daredevil artist, David Mazzucchelli, made the same thing: he stopped drawing when he was at the peek of his success, and he decided to take a gap year in order to focus on his second job as a rock musician.
When he came back to comics, he had lost all his artistic talent: he’s still working in the industry, but his art seems to be made by a 5 years old child. I’m 100 % sure that, if it weren’t drawn by him, no one would publish it.
Even if Ed Benes doesn’t lose his artistic talent, it’s not so expected that he will get some work again, when he retraces his steps: by that time, DC will have replaced him with another artist, and could not be interested in finding him something to do. Marvel could not be interested too.
Also, his explanation is ridiculous: you’re a penciller, man! What’s so stressful about your job? I can understand if the president of the United States or a miner says he’s stressed, but a penciller… utterly ridiculous.
It seems that Batgirl’s readers can’t get any peace. First miss Simone was forced to leave the title (luckily that ended well), and now this. And the weirdest thing is that all this chaos is happening on a best seller series: usually, the more a title is successful, the more the creative team keeps working on it. Anyway, Batgirl’s fans, remember that creators come and go, but Batgirl stays, and that is a fair few.

    • “When the 90s began, Jim Carrey and Robin Williams were the most popular comedy actors.”
I know. Now I can’t even remember the last movie I saw them in it’s been so long.

“David Mazzucchelli, made the same thing: he stopped drawing when he was at the peek of his success, and he decided to take a gap year in order to focus on his second job as a rock musician.”
I guess the music career didn’t work out for him if he came back. Don’t know how someone can get that bad after a year. Sure he may be rusty at first but it should be like riding a bike. Hopefully Benes doesn’t become the next Mazzucchelli.

“Also, his explanation is ridiculous: you’re a penciller, man! What’s so stressful about your job? I can understand if the president of the United States or a miner says he’s stressed, but a penciller… utterly ridiculous.”
Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines! Think the President has it hard, try meeting those dreaded deadlines! 🙂

Batgirl is cursed. How much more drama can this series take? Maybe Pugh is leaving Animal Man to come onto this book? Just a thought, though I’d rather have another artist maybe Tony S. Daniels instead?

  2. Great news about The Man of Steel and Guardians of the Galaxy this week. I’m really looking forwad to these two, and its great to hear that Alex Kingston will be staring in Arrow as well. That’s such a great show. I kinda expected the Batman movie to be put back for a while, and I think Batgirl has been a greta book as well. Shame that Ed Benes is leaving and taking a break for a while, but can understand his reasons, I look forward to his return. I’d also lke to thank you for including my blog Sci-Fi Jubilee in your Trending section. Cheers for all your support and RT’s on Twitter :O)

    • First Captain Jack Harkness, now River Song. Who’s next…David Tennant? Oh, that would be awesome indeed if it happened!

Thanks as well for your support and RTs. As my old teacher would say “You are a gentleman and a scholar”. 🙂
