On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 02/13/13

Radar

In this feature I’ll highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Batgirl #17
Batgirl #17
Creative Team
Ray Fawkes and Ed Benes
Solicitation
“Barbara Gordon must deal with the fallout from ‘DEATH OF THE FAMILY’ in this issue that will forever change her status quo in The New 52! What does James Gordon Jr. have planned for his sister, Batgirl?”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
This confrontation has been slowly building up and in this issue all hell breaks loose. I’ve seen conflicting reports of who is actually writing this issue but the one thing that has remained consistent is that the fantastic art of Ed Benes will be featured. I’m looking forward to this brother-sister showdown and I hope this book continues the momentum it achieved from “Death of the Family”.

Batman #17
Batman #17
Creative Team
Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo
Solicitation
“This is it: The stunning conclusion to ‘DEATH OF THE FAMILY’! Who lives? Who dies? Who laughs last? Find out as Batman and The Joker face off one last time!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
This…is…it. The conclusion of the stellar “Death of the Family” crossover has me on the edge of my seat. Death has been promised but which unfortunate DC character will be facing the Grim Reaper? I’ll be on pins and needles as I read it and will do my best to avoid the spoilers that will inevitably flood the internet on Wednesday. Must…stay…strong.

Ghostbusters #1
Ghostbusters #1
Creative Team
Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening
Solicitation

“The Ghostbusters are gone, spirited away by some dastardly demons from another dimension! But spectral shenanigans haven’t ceased in the city that never sleeps, meaning a new group will need to step up and don the proton packs. Will the New Ghostbusters be able to rescue their predecessors, or will they share the same fate? The Ghostbusters creative super-team of Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening return to bust out more ectoplasmic excitement in this all-new Ghostbusters ongoing volume!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
I was actually under the impression that this series still had #17 to come out before the reboot but it turns out I’m wrong. I thought that #17 would end on a cliffhanger to set up the new status quo but it turns out I’m wrong. Instead we’re being dropped head first into a new team and this uncertainty and the multitude of questions that are popping up in my head has actually increased my interest in this series. A job well done indeed.

Secret Avengers #1
Secret Avengers #1
Creative Team
Nick Spencer and Luke Ross
Solicitation
“‘The Most Dangerous Secrets We Have… Are The Ones We Keep From Ourselves.’ The new Nick Fury leads a covert Avengers strike team including but not limited to Hawkeye, Black Widow, The Hulk, The Winter Soldier, Maria Hill and Phil Coulson on missions so dangerous, even the team members themselves can’t know about them!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
I love Nick Spencer’s Morning Glories, I’m a fan of Hawkeye and Maria Hill, and I like the premise. Those three elements have compelled me to try out this new Marvel NOW version of a series I never picked up before. Mission accomplished Marvel, though the quality of said first issue will be the determining factor of whether I stick around. This book could go either way and I’m excited to find out if this will be a permanent member of my pull-list or simply a miss. This giant question mark makes me all the more reason to be anticipated for the answer.

Uncanny X-Men #1
Uncanny X-Men #1
Creative Team

Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Bachalo
Solicitation
“The true flagship book of the X-Men returns. In the wake of the Phoenix, the world has changed and is torn on exactly what Cyclops and his team of X-Men are–visionary revolutionaries or dangerous terrorists? Whatever the truth, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magneto, and Magik are out in the world gathering up new mutants and redefining the name UNCANNY X-MEN.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
A new Uncanny X-Men series? Bendis as writer? The talented Chris Bachalo on art? How can I not be pumped for the first issue? Need I say more? If it’s anything like his All-New X-Men series I’ll be mighty pleased.

  1. I decided not to follow FF anymore. I had already ordered issue # 6 and I meant to order the TP, but now I changed my mind. I’ll try to explain you why.
The solicitations for issues # 7 and # 8 (http://www.comicbookresources.com:8080/?page=article&id=43749) show that this series has (or at least will have in those issues) a cosmic setting (something I should have expected, since it’s a Fantastic Four spin – off), and those kind of comic book definitely isn’t my cup of tea. There are some things that could make me change my mind (Allred’s art, the enthusiast reviews I routinely read, and so on), but at present this is my decision.
