#Trending In The World Of Comics: 03/08/13-03/14/13

In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, TV shows, video games, etc. Let’s begin:

DC Anniversary & BeyonddccomicslogoThe rumors are already starting in regards to what DC has in store for their New 52 anniversary this coming September. The leading one is that all the comics will be renamed for the month with each title belonging to one villain associated with the series. Then in October, the various comics would continue on with Issue #25. This long rumored Villain Month has been batted around for a while and this latest batch of talks seems to point that this could be a distinct possibility. Then comes the rumors of what may follow: the current theory is that sixteen titles will be cancelled and will be replaced by four weekly series. The chosen four would be Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and Justice League. Villain Month sounds great to me but I’d rather not have the weekly thing happen. Either way it’s a long way to September so things could change between now and then.

Arrow NewsArrow_LogoColton Haynes (Roy Harper) got a promotion to series regular for Season 2 but that wasn’t the only bit of news dropped this week: Oliver will be heading to Blüdhaven (and before you get your hopes up…no, Nightwing will not make an appearance) and a mysterious fan favourite villain will be showing up before Season’s end. Now if only Manu Bennett gets promoted to series regular, I’d be a very happy man indeed.

Drax FoundDraxThis week Marvel finally found their actor to play Drax the Destroyer in their upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The man who emerged victorious was none other than former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista. He certainly has the size and the muscles to pull the role off but does he have the acting chops? He beat out Jason Momoa (Conan the Barbarian) who was angling for a bigger payday. His loss but is it our gain?

Marvel Moviesmarvel logoThree tidbits of Marvel movie news. First up is The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We learned that the actress playing Mary Jane (Shailene Woodley) has already wrapped up shooting signifying that her part will not be very big at all. Secondly, Nicolas Cage revealed this about any future appearance as Ghost Rider: “I think the ship has sailed on that one. At least with me involved. Personally, I’m done. I’ve done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I’m done.” God, the second movie was awful. Hopefully the rights revert back to Marvel and we can get a great Ghost Rider movie. Finally we turn our attention to X-Men: Days of Future Past. In an interview with BleedingCool, director Bryan Singer had this to say about the upcoming movie: “The movie is about destiny. What is your fate? What were you supposed to do, what should you have done when you were younger? What didn’t you do that would have made for a better future? And what if you could go back and change that. I think I’ve got the time travel – I don’t really want to call it time travel, but for want of a better word, time travel figured out. I pitched it to James Cameron and he signed off on it.” The interviewer also got the opinion that Apocalypse would be featured especially after witnessing Singer’s reactions to the various questions thrown his way on the subject.

Zero Yeardc27DC revealed its next big Batman arc with Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo entitled “Batman: Zero Year”. It’s going to consist of 11 issues and start with June’s Batman #21. The storyline will look back on Bruce Wayne’s early days as Batman and as Snyder  puts it: “So I can promise you that with this one, you might’ve seen the origin or the transformative years of Bruce Wayne done a lot, but this is really our take and something different. While it’s very, very respectful – and I hope you guys agree – of the past and the stories we love the most, it’s also something that is us trying to give you guys something that you’ve never seen.” Sound great considering the creative talent involved!

And that concludes #Trending. Thoughts on any subjects discussed? Anything else worth mentioning? Comment below!
