The Comic Connection: Issue #6

Welcome to the sixth edition of the Comic Connection! The main point of its existence is to share and discuss, to Connect through Comics. Its centrepiece is the Weekly Question, a question I will pose dealing with anything Comic related. Then I turn it over to you and to Twitter to offer any feedback/your opinion on the topic with your answers being featured on next week’s posting. I’ll also share some cool comic-related fan art along with links to my favourite blogs and people to follow on Twitter. With that said, let’s revisit last week’s question:

Last week I asked “What Marvel properties would you like to see get their own Ongoing or Mini-Series?”. To see my answer on the topic visit HERE. As for what the rest of you had to say…

@JoeTeulon: Doctor Strange!

@TSOGblog: Too obvious. I’m out. 😉 (Alpha Flight) / Squadron Supreme, the original version.

@Aliasego: A Gamma Flight ongoing would be nice too.

@PanelsAndPixels: Would love another Mystique ongoing. She’s a great character when used well.

@mick6721: Howard the Duck

@RareEarthComics: it’s time for Silver Surfer to get an ongoing book again. Also, Sleepwalker. Wasn’t good the first time but lots of potential!

@TonyCSGreenall: Silver Surfer. / I’m surprised he hasn’t resurfaced yet under the Marvel Now tag.Only a matter of time I’m sure.

@JoshCrewsReally: I’d love to see more Surfer.

@AvantGarve: hmm can only think of 2 titles currently not active (AFAIK?) that I loved when I was young/er: Power Pack, and Spider-Ham!

Thanks to all that shared! Now we move onto this week’s question:

“What current DC Titles would you like to see cancelled to make room for new entries into the New 52?”

This was the character that was most affected by the New 52…affected for the worse. What was once a loved character has changed into a whiny and unlikable one. This series has done nothing to establish a supporting cast, has produced no memorable storylines that didn’t crossover to another title, and has really amounted to nothing. The character has enough face time in Teen Titans, so I think it’s time to put this series out of its misery.

Batman: The Dark Knight

This is basically that “other” Batman title. He already stars in Detective Comics, Batman, Legends of the Dark Knight, Batman Incorporated, and Batman and ____ not to mention the various team-up books he is in: Justice League and Superman/Batman. This series brings nothing new or unique to the table and should be put into retirement.

Batman & (_____)

Ever since Damian perished in the pages of Batman Incorporated, this series has lost its purpose. What was once a terrific character study into the father-son dynamic of Bruce and Damian has turned into nothing more than a glorified team-up book. There are so many characters that haven’t been utilized and if they wanted to go the team-up route than a Brave and the Bold type format would be the better choice. To get there, this series needs to end.

There are 13 comics in the Batman portion of the New 52. I don’t know who out there was demanding for a book starting a Talon but that is what we got. Currently it is riding on the popularity of the “Court of Owls” storyline but that will only get you so far. Best to end this series while they’re ahead before it starts sinking into the abyss. I’m sure there’s another Batman-related character out there that is more worthy and would have a more passionate fan base to replace this one.

Red Lanterns

This series has lasted longer than I ever thought it would. Much has to be owed to the strength of the Green Lantern franchise for that fact but I only wonder what could be if we focused on someone else. Move Atrocitus to the New Guardians or reinvent this one as a comic focusing on the various different coloured Corps and I think sales would be even higher. There’s only so far you can take this series as it stands now.

Worlds’ Finest

This title has been nothing but a disappointment, an uneven mess that deserves to be put out to pasture. I’d rather see these two integrated into the larger DC Universe and end this series altogether. Huntress could move to Birds of Prey and Power Girl to one of the various Superman Titles. Sales keep on going down so it really is just a matter fo time.

So that’s my answer to the question. I’d love to hear from everyone else what yours would be. Comment below if you have anything you’d like to share.

  1. I’m honoured to be linked on one of my favourite blogs! Thanks! There isn’t really one title of the New 52 that I would like to see cancelled…but there are a lot I would like to see revamped (TEEN TITANS, SUPERBOY)! If I had to pick, I’d agree with you and say DARK KNIGHT. There are already plenty of Batman titles!
