The Comic Connection: Issue #9

Welcome to the ninth edition of the Comic Connection! The main point of its existence is to share and discuss, to Connect through Comics. Its centrepiece is the Weekly Question, a question I will pose dealing with anything Comic related. Then I turn it over to you and to Twitter to offer any feedback/your opinion on the topic with your answers being featured on next week’s posting. I’ll also share some cool comic-related fan art along with links to my favourite blogs and people to follow on Twitter. With that said, let’s revisit last week’s question:

Last week I asked “What characters would you like to see added as DLC for the video game Injustice: Gods Amongst Us?”. To see my answer on the topic visit HERE. As for what the rest of you had to say…

@ReynardCity: Do they have Booster Gold yet? / Brilliant character, good to mix it up a bit! / With the BBATB voice of course!

@thatemilykelley: Huntress!

@Ryan_DC_2814: Black Canary, Power Girl, Mera, Hawkman, Grodd and Poison Ivy. To name a few.

@Aliasego: Gunfire, Prez, Damage, and Blue Devil.

@Raving_Ranter: Bertinelli for sure! Definitely the better fit for a game certainly like that. Bertinelli period is awesome, game – comics – cartoon – TV – possible movies…Helena is just great. 🙂

Thanks to all that shared! Now we move onto this week’s question:

“What Comics are you most looking forward to on Free Comic Book Day 2013?”

Aphrodite IX #1

Creative Team

Matt Hawkins and Stjepan Sejic
“Aphrodite IX returns for Free Comic Book Day!  This first free issue launches a new ongoing series of Top Cow’s fan favorite, memory challenged, green haired, questionably human heroine.  Hundreds of years after a cataclysmic event scorched the surface, Earth and its inhabitants have been forever altered and a new landscape and political struggle has taken hold with three distinct factions fighting for control.  Aphrodite IX is both anachronism and advanced technology in a world that she no longer recognizes.  No aliens, just humans and their genetically and technologically altered descendants in a mixture of the best Sci-Fi and Fantasy has to offer!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Great art and the first issue of an ongoing series for free is a great promotion and one I’ll take them up on. Who knows…it may even translate to me picking up the series?

Atomic Robo & Friends

Creative Team

Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener
“Unanimously heralded by fans, creators, retailers and critics as the perfect first comic to give to a non-comic-reader. It’s a robotic experiment gone wrong, and only Atomic Robo’s brand of violent science can save the day. We’ve got lasers, explosions, and robots. It’s like the transforming-robot movies, but comprehensible! Plus, previews of 2013 adventures of Red 5 favorites and new faces.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
I’m a hug fan of everything Atomic Robo. I’ve been a fan since the beginning, have every issue including the FCBD ones that have been released, and even help supported the Kickstarter for the mini-short. This will be the first one I pick off the table for sure!

Creative Team
Jonathan Hickman and Jim Cheung

“The biggest super heroes in comics today – the Avengers, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Fantastic Four, Inhumans, Superior Spider-Man & more! The most dangerous threat in the Marvel Universe – Thanos! The grandest Marvel Comics event of all time – INFINITY! This May for Free Comic Book Day, prepare yourselves for the greatest battle for survival ever waged in the Marvel Universe as Marvel marches towards Infinity! In this all-new story by the blockbuster creative team of Jonathan Hickman and Jim Cheung, witness the opening shots of the war that will be heard around the galaxy. Plus, get a sneak peek behind a major Marvel release that hasn’t been announced yet and relive Thanos’ first solo story. With the entire Marvel Universe on the brink of intergalactic war, no fan can miss this year’s Free Comic Book Day!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Marvel’s next big event kicks off here so how can I afford not to pick it up? Whereas DC’s offering is a little weak, this one promises to give us some original content which makes me happy indeed.

Mass Effect/Killjoys/R.I.P.D.

Creative Team
Jeremy Barlow, Garry Brown, and Various
“Three blockbuster titles fill this FCBD offering! In R.I.P.D., a séance goes terribly wrong! Then, in Mass Effect, follow a flight-school grad as he breaks the rules to prove himself in space! Finally, check out the police-state landscape of the highly anticipated miniseries The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Let’s see: I love the Mass Effect video game series, I’m down for the ongoing Fabulous Killjoys series, and R.I.P.D. looks to be an interesting premise. How can I go wrong?

Molly Danger/Princeless

Creative Team

Jamal Igle, Jeremy Whitley, and Various
“Two complete stories!  She’s Strong, She’s smart, and she’s incredibly brave. She’s the protector of Coopersville, the Princess of Finesse, the petite powerhouse known only as Molly Danger!  But what secrets threaten everything she holds dear.  And on her way to rescue her sisters, Adrienne finds another mysterious princess locked away in a tower, but she’s guarded by one of the knights sent to hunt Adrienne. Who is this princess and will Adrienne and Bedelia survive trying to rescue her?”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
This looks to be a fun series to pick up and it’s from the mind of a great writer in the form of Jamal Igle. I’m down for it no matter how “girly” it may turn out to be.

The Red Ten #0 Creative Team
Tyler James, Paul Allor, Cesar Feliciano, Joe Mulvey, and Various
“Who are THE RED TEN? And who wants them dead? Delve deeper into the murder mystery maxi-series that is a superhero retelling of Agatha Christie’s classic whodunit “And Then There Were None.”  Also features OXYMORON: QUIET RIOT, where a super-criminal psychopath holds a city hostage in terrifying silence as one cop struggles to stop the madman before her city burns to the ground”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
An Agatha Christie whodunit done as a superhero series? Yeah, I’d love to see that!

Stan Lee’s Chakra The Invincible Creative Team
Stan Lee, Graphic, and Jeevan Kang
“From the mind of legendary creator Stan Lee comes his newest superhero, CHAKRA THE INVINCIBLE.  Chakra tells the story of young Indian teenager, Raju Rai, a technology genius living in Mumbai. Determined to use science to unlock the secrets of human potential, Raju develops a technological suit that activates the mystical Chakras of the body, unleashing newfound abilities and powers. ‘Against the spectacular backdrop of the great Indian metropolis of Mumbai, we tell the incredible saga of Chakra, our daring and dangerous teenage hero.’ – Stan Lee.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
The newest creation from Stan Lee. Need I say more?

Strangers #1

Creative Team
Chris Roberson and Scott Kowalchuck

“’The last thing you want to see is my hands.’ They’re called the Strangers. They’re deadly. Dangerous. And you’ll never see them unless they want you to. But now they’ve come up against something big – United States government big. A cover-up of international proportions, and at the center of it all is the Strangers’ deadliest foe, a man known only as Capricorn. A man who knows the Strangers. A man who sees them.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
The “first issue for free” concept is also used by this comic, a concept that worked wonders for the company’s Sixth Gun series. The plot looks interesting and I’m definitely interested to see if that premise turns into an enjoyable read and a possible addition to my pull-list.

The Tick Creative Team
Jeff McClelland, Pietro, Duane Redhead, and Duane Redhead
“This FCBD, NEC Press offers fans—both old and new!—a FULL-COLOR 32-page comic book with an ALL-NEW FULL-LENGTH Tick story! Plus exciting all-new backup features as well. “A Day at the Beach” starts out innocently enough for The Tick, Arthur, Bumbling Bee & their friends—until The Tick encounters an invasion force from under the sea! A story sure to be enjoyed by existing Tick fans as well as suitable to introduce new readers to the world of The Tick and his cohorts!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
I love the Tick! Tick in colour? Free? Sold! “SPOON”!

The Walking Dead Special

Creative Team

Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, and Cliff Rathburn
“This special Walking Dead issue contains a new Tyrese short story, who made his television debut in The Walking Dead Season 3! It also reprints short stories featuring Michonne, The Governor and Morgan. This special issue is a must-have for Walking Dead fans–none of these stories will be reprinted in the trade paperbacks!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
I’m a fan of the TV show though I have to admit I’ve never read a single issue of the comic series it was based on. This free issue looks to be a great way to sample the universe and I’m sure it will be flying off the tables pretty quick considering the TV show’s popularity.

So that’s my answer to the question. I’d love to hear from everyone else what yours would be. Comment below if you have anything you’d like to share.

  1. Wow, THE STRANGERS looks great! There are so many great looking books this year, I can’t wait! I’m most looking forward to the Megaman/Sonic crossover FCBD issue from Archie, and Marvel’s Infinity!

    • So many comics look great…and they’re all free. One of the real disappoints for me is DC’s offering: a reprint and a sneak peak. A wasted opportunity in my mind. Should have done a prelude chapter to Trinity War to get everyone excited much as Marvel is doing for Infinity.

  2. This is the first year I haven’t paid attention to the FCB books because I knew I’d be out of town. I agree with ThePureMood – The Strangers looks pretty cool. My LCS retailer slipped a copy of Infinity into my stack of books this week because I’ve been reading Hickman’s Avengers books. It’s interesting – plants more questions than it answers.

    • “It’s interesting – plants more questions than it answers.”
The sign of any great Hickman book. 🙂

First grab for me will be Atomic Robo and then I’m going straight for the Strangers. Have a geat weekend!
