#Trending In The World Of Comics: 06/06/13-06/12/13

In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, TV shows, video games, etc. while also highlighting various Comic Book Cosplay (one female and one male). It’s a Man of Steel themed edition of #Trending this week with both Lead Stories and the Cosplay section being Superman-related. Let’s begin:

The Man of Steelcharacter_bio_576_supermanMan of Steel finally hit theatres, so let’s discuss some interesting news and notes about the movie. Did you know that in order to have maximum awareness for the movie, Warner Brothers partnered with over 98 companies and earned $170 million dollars from them in sponsorship deals/product placement? Some of the companies involved were Mattel, Lego, JAKKS Pacific, Converse, Rubie’s, Hallmark, Chrysler, Nokia, Carls Jr., Hershey’s, Walmart and the U.S. Army National Guard to name a few. Did you know that Warner Brothers is forecasting the Man of Steel to take a final haul of $900 million dollars? That’s quite a bit of change for the opening salvo in the DC Cinematic Universe. Are their expectations too high? Did you know that before they hired Zack Snyder it was down to him or Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) as to who would direct it? According to the Hollywood Reporter, Snyder winning was more due to loyalty than anything else: “Over at Warner Bros., studio chief Jeff Robinov‘s fierce loyalty to director Zack Snyder is being tested June 14 with the $225 million Man of Steel. The relationship dates to the 2007 hit 300, even though Snyder’s three subsequent Warners films – Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Sucker Punch – disappointed. However, while giving him Man of Steel (over the other finalist, Darren Aronofsky), Robinov took out insurance with producer Christopher Nolan, the studio’s most important filmmaker.” That wraps-up this edition of Did You Know!

Beyond The Man of Steelcharacter_bio_576_supermanAnd now let’s turn our attention to what comes next! Warner Brothers has already fast-tracked a sequel to the movie with Snyder and David Goyer set to return. Apparently not only will Goyer write the sequel but he is also down to pen the script of Justice League as well. When asked about Justice League, Zack Snyder had this to say: “The truth is that we really want to make sure that Superman is working. You can’t make a Justice League movie without Superman at the top, at the helm of the Justice League. Listen, I’m super-excited about the world that we created for Superman, and it’s been great fun. And it’s certainly something that I would be happy to talk about if people were interested in seeing more Superman.” That Flash solo movie is looking further and further off with each passing month…

DC News
Last week, Villains Month was officially revealed but notably absent was JH Williams III (Batwoman). He’s been asked about his absence in the event and this is what he had to say on Twitter: “Haden and I didn’t even get to write one. Had plans for a certain scaly villain but… Had the option of still doing one, but told we could not pursue what we had been building for the last 2 years. Ever. So we said no. They have the right to decide that, they own the characters, but I can’t agree with it. Certainly makes one feel ‘what’s the point?’ Yes, disappointing. Spending a large amount of time planning something grand, only for someone else to scuttle it is tiring.”  You better be careful DC. You don’t want yet another disgruntled employee leave over creative differences and join the competition.

(#2) After Villains Month, the comic series Batman will resume its “Zero Year” storyline in November and the storyline will also crossover into the other Bat-books similar to how “Night of the Owls” played out. Anyone ready for a crossover that isn’t really a crossover again? I for one can’t wait to see what everyone was up to ten years (or so) earlier.

Marvel News

(#1) After showcasing the roster last week, Marvel officially announced their new series, Mighty Avengers. The book will start in September and will come to us from the creative team of Al Ewing and Greg Land. The previously announced roster was Luke Cage, Superior Spider-Man, Blue Marvel, She-Hulk, White Tiger, and Power Man but they revealed that Monica Rambeau, Falcon, and a new Ronin would also be involved.

Movies/TV News
(#1) Whereas FOX’s X-Men: Days of Future Past have their Quicksliver cast (Evan Peters), sources are saying Marvel are trying to convince Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) to play their version of the character in Avengers 2. The war continues on…

(#2) A live-action Archie comic book movie is in development with Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) directing and the script coming from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee). There was talk of including zombies in the movie (considering Roberto is going to be writing an Archie comic with zombies) but I think that’s a load of nonsense.

(#3) A Scottish Newspaper is claiming to know the identity of the character that Karen Gillan will be playing in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie: “Karen Gillan will have to be in good shape for her role as a gold bikini-clad alien villain in the Marvel comics superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy. The former Doctor Who star will play Angela, a flame-haired, sword-wielding bounty hunter. Karen will be stunning as the chief female villain of the movie but she will have her work cut out as the role involves a lot of physical workouts and with a costume as revealing, she will have to be in top shape.” If this holds true, I’m shocked that this is who she’ll be playing!

(#4) Highlight for SPOILERS if you dare! The character that actor Colm Feore is playing in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is none other than Adrian Toomes. It’s unclear if we’ll see him donning the suit and becoming the Vulture though.

(#5) Samuel L. Jackson was discussing the possibility of appearing on the TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or rather lending his vocal talents to it: “Oh! If I was going to do S.H.I.E.L.D., I’d like to be — you know Charlie’s voice on Charlie’s Angels? That would be perfect. Because everybody recognizes my voice. That would be good enough for me. And I told Joss that.” Sounds perfect to me!

  1. I thought Watchmen was great. But I love Black Swan ever more and would be totally interested in Aronofsky’s take on a superhero movie.

I didn’t dare highlight the spoilers but Colm Feore is a fantastic villain in Revolution tv show.

    • Aronofsky was originally going to direct The Wolverine as well. Maybe one of these days he’ll finally get to direct a superhero movie…

Snyder’s movies usually have a much darker tone then most (and he usually kills/lobotomizes his main characters). A darker tone for Superman is alright as long as he doesn’t go too dark. I haven’t seen it yet but I’m cautiously optimistic. Also, to continue the trend, I expect him to do the Death of Superman arc in Man of Steel 3. Gotta kill his main character after all, even if it is temporary. 🙂

I agree, Colm Feore was good in Revolution. It will be interesting to see him play SPOILERS for sure!
