On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 06/19/13

Radar

In this feature I’ll highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Age of Ultron #10

Creative Team
Brian Michael Bendis and Brandon Peterson
Solicitation
“THE FINALE! The biggest secret in comics will be revealed to you! An ending so confidential even the artists of this book don’t know what lies on the final pages! A surprise so big that comic book legend Joe Quesada himself returns to the pages of Marvel Comics to draw a sequence that people will be talking about for years.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Marvel has hyped this last issue to the nth degree. Just take a look at that solicitation: an ending that the artists don’t even know about, an ending that Marvel had to pull in Quesada to draw in order to hide it? What could be so amazing? What is in need of so much secrecy? Is Marvel setting us up for bitter disappointment or is this truly going to live up to hype? I expect big things…at least I’m hoping they’re big.

Fantastic Four #9
Fantastic Four #9
Creative Team
Matt Fraction and Mark Bagley
Solicitation
“Did a good-natured prank-gone-wrong mean Ben Grimm caused the accident that led Victor Von Doom down his wicked path?
As the sickness spreads to the other members of the family, their attention turns to righting this past wrong — could saving Victor be the only way stop Dr. Doom? Before they answer that, however, they have to deal with the Council of Dooms who treat the day of the Incident as a kind of nativity — and dozens of Dooms from dozens of realities have come to witness the birth of the Alpha Doom. . . oh boy that dorm room is gonna get crowded fast.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Ben Grimm is responsible for the creation of Doctor Doom? A Council of Dooms? Altering the past? A sickness spreading? I haven’t been this excited for an issue of Fantastic Four since Hickman left the title!

“‘BLIND RAGE’ PART 1! Guest-starring Daredevil! The secret of the friendship between Matt Murdock and Bruce Banner! Hulk–on the witness stand?”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
“Guest-starring Daredevil.” That’s all I needed to hear. This should be an awesome team-up involving a character (Daredevil) that Waid is simply blowing me away with each subsequent issue. I expect this issue to climb in quality just with Matt Murdock’s presence alone.

Mind The Gap #11
Mind The Gap #11 (Cover A - Esquejo)
Creative Team
Jim McAnn and Sami Basri
Solicitation
“‘OUT OF BODIES’ Part One. As the Hoodie revelation sinks in, lines are drawn in the sand, friendships are torn apart, and new mysteries come to light. Can what was said be the truth? Who is a pawn and who is a player? Meanwhile, Elle is finding her own mental world being overwhelmed now that her secret has come to light to the rest of the spirits in the Garden. But that’s not going to stop her from getting answers from someone who has betrayed her!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
As I still recover  from the revelations/developments of last issue, I can’t wait to see how they follow it all up here. Hoodie was revealed! Elle’s secret is out! Allies are enemies! Enemies are allies? Mind the gap? More like don’t mind the pure awesomeness.

Wonder Woman #21
Wonder Woman #21

Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang
Solicitation
“Wonder Woman’s already reeling from the battle of a lifetime. How can she possibly withstand an all-out attack from her eldest brother, the deadly First Born? London’s in ruins, Diana’s family is shattered, and gods old and new will feel the First Born’s wrath!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
They’ve been building up to this confrontation ever since the First Born was introduced in the pages of this series. Now the time has finally arrived for the knock-out epic brawl to end all brawls. Can Wonder Woman hope to overcome such a powerful foe? Whatever the answer may be, it is guaranteed to be one excellent read!

    • Captain Marvel is in the middle of a crossover right now if I’m not mistaken. How is it going? Also, X-Factor’s ending arc should be epic but a sad occurrence to behold as well…

      • It is in a crossover with Avengers Assemble, also penned by Kelly Sue DeConnick. It’s going well. It’s a pretty good story. But the real joy is in the characterization. DeConnick writes great people.

        • I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never really read much of her work besides a 3 issue Supergirl arc but I’ve heard nothing but good things. Maybe I’ll pick up the TPB sometime.

          • I would recommend checking out her Osborn mini from a couple years ago. The art was by Emma Rios, who’s just better than she has any right to be. It was a brilliant mini, which was responsible for the creations of Ai Apaec and June Covington, who were both recently used in Dark Avengers.

DeConnick also did pretty good one-shots for Rescue and Sif. Her run on Avengers Assemble has had the most classic Avengers feel of all the current Avengers books. And she’s writing the best friendship in comics, between Carol and Jessica. Seriously, the best friendship.

            • I’ll have to check it out since I’m a big Spider-Man fan. My LCS has a big sale this weekend so hopefully they have it in stock. (Fingers crossed!)

You’ve piqued my interest for sure! Thanks for the comments (and the recommendations). 🙂
