#Trending In The World Of Comics: 06/13/13-06/19/13 (Mary Jane No More, Man of Steel Controversy, & Other Topics)

In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, TV shows, video games, etc. while also highlighting various Comic Book Cosplay (one female and one male). Let’s begin:

Mary Jane No More! And Other Amazing Spider-Man 2 Newshr_The_Amazing_Spider-Man_2The big story this week is that the character of Mary Jane and by extension the actress playing her (Shailene Woodley) will have all her scenes cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Director Marc Webb had this to say on his decision: “I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.” When asked for a comment, Shailene stated: “Of course I’m bummed… but I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing Mary Jane until the next film.” As for the actress reprising the role in the third movie, the odds are extremely unlikely according to the Hollywood Reporter: “Woodley will likely be busy with the sequels to her upcoming sci-fi movie Divergent and may not be available, so the role may have to be recast.” As if on cue, another actress has just been hired to join the franchise fueling speculation that she’ll be the new MJ. More on this story next week! As for Shailene, I was never really a big fan of her playing MJ in the first place so I’m not torn up about her getting the axe. Better to cut her now then replace her in the next installment with a different actress. I hate when movies do this. In other news, Sony announced two more sequels for The Amazing Spider-Man even before the second one hits theatres. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will come out June 10, 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 will see a release on May 4, 2018. Sony sure has confidence that the sequel is going to do big box-office numbers. Finally, we know Felicity Jones is going to be in ASM 2 but what we don’t know is which character she’ll be playing. Everyone has their theory ranging from Betty Brant to the leading candidate of Felicia Hardy aka the Black Cat. Well in an interview with the actress, a question was asked rather straightforwardly about how she is looking forward to everyone seeing her as Black Cat. Her response: “Um, well, uhhh… possibly. I don’t know, yeah. I kind of, it’s umm…yeah, if that happens, that would be wonderful, yeah.” Black Cat is looking more and more likely…

The Man of Steel Controversycharacter_bio_576_supermanFor those that have seen the movie you know what I’m talking about. For those that haven’t I wouldn’t recommend highlighting the following passage: SPOILERS (Highlight to View) Zack Snyder and David Goyer revealed that Christopher Nolan did not initially approve of Superman killing Gerneral Zod. Goyer said: “Killing Zod was a big thing. And that was something that Chris Nolan originally said, ‘There’s no way you can do this’…. Originally, Zod got sucked into the Phantom Zone along with the others. We talked to some of the people at DC Comics and said, ‘Do you think there’s ever a way that Superman would kill someone?’ At first they said, ‘No way. No way.’ We said, ‘But what if he didn’t have a choice?’ Originally, Chris didn’t even want to let us try to write it. Zack and I said, ‘We think we can figure out a way that you’ll buy it.’ I came up with this idea of the heat vision and these people about to die. I wrote the scene and I gave it to Chris and he said, ‘OK, you convinced me. I buy it.’ If you don’t reinvent these characters…then they become stagnant, and they cease being relevant…hopefully, we’ve redefined Superman.”
Snyder added: “If it’s truly an origin story, his aversion to killing is unexplained. I felt like, if we could find a way of making it impossible for him – Kobayashi Maru, totally no way out – I felt like that could also make you go, ‘This is the why of him never killing again.’ He’s basically obliterated his entire people and his culture, and he is responsible for it, and he’s just, like, ‘How could I ever kill again?’ If there were more adventures for our Superman to go on, you’re given this thing where, you don’t know 100 percent what he’s going to do. When you put in stone the concept that he won’t kill, and it’s totally in stone, it really erases an option in the viewer’s mind…you’ll always have in the back of your mind, ‘How far can you push him?’ If he sees Lois get hurt, or his mother get killed, you just made a really mad Superman that we know is capable of some really horrible stuff, if he wants to be. That’s the thing that’s cool about him, in some ways. The idea that he has the frailties of a human emotionally. But you don’t want to get that guy mad.”
In my opinion, Superman should not kill…period and it’s still a scene that leaves a sour taste in my mouth and the mouths of many I’ve talked to. (End of SPOILERS) This is a debate that is going to last for quite sometime.

DC News
DC revealed a new spiritual successor to Legion of Super-Heroes and its name is Justice League 3000. The new series will have a Justice League comprised of future versions of Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman. The true identities of these characters are a mystery but what isn’t a mystery is the fact that the creative teams consists of Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire. Apparently the first issue will hit sometime in the fall with October being a likely candidate. If this team’s past work on Justice League International is any indication, we are in for a real treat!

(#2) Another new series was also revealed written by Charles Soule and drawn by Tony Daniel. The series? Well it’s Superman/Wonder Woman. The first issue is confirmed to be coming out in October and proves that their relationship isn’t going to end anytime soon. So we’ve got Batman/Superman and Superman/Wonder Woman. Where’s the love for a Batman/Wonder Woman series I wonder and how long will it take for them to announce one?

(#3) Apparently the use of the 3D covers for Villains month is actually going to cause DC to lose money even though each issue is $3.99 instead of the regular $2.99. Because of this the print runs of each issue have been set based on existing sales and there won’t be any reorders available. If you’re on the fence you better make your mind up pretty quick and let your LCS know to order any issues you want sooner rather than later.

(#4) A new Green Lantern crossover is on the horizon and its name is “Lights Out.” Details are scarce but I’m sure more will develop on this story at Comic-Con if not earlier.

(#5) The new writer of Earth 2 is none other than Tom Taylor who has been instrumental in the success of the Injustice: Gods Among Us digital series. Rest assured that Nicola Scott will remain as the artist however. I’ll take a wait and see approach with this news…

(#6) I mentioned before that Batman’s Zero Year arc would carry over into other Bat-Family titles in November but apparently it’s not going to stop there. Also involved at the very least is Action Comics, Flash, Green Arrow, and Green Lantern Corps. Are they going overboard here or is there really such as thing as too much of a good thing?

Marvel News

(#1) Marvel announced their second upcoming title in their Original Graphic Novel line entitled Spider-Man: Family Business. The title will be written by Mark Waid and James Robinson with Gabriele Dell’Otto handling the art. The main focus of the book will be the introduction of Teresa Parker who is claiming to be the long-lost sister of Peter Parker. The two of them will be caught up in the Kingpin’s growing global criminal expansion. Mark Waid had this to say: “He has every reason to be skeptical about who this woman is and who she says she is. It seems very bizarre to him that Aunt May never mentioned anything about this woman, who’s about his age and the resemblance is there. Peter wants to try to figure out what this mystery is all about but basically they’re running from a crime syndicate out to kill them both throughout the novel, so there’s not a whole lot of time for Spider-Man to sit and relax and slowly suss this out.” I’m definitely intrigued. And it features Peter as Spider-Man to boot!

(#2) On July 9th, Marvel will announce a new comic called Share Your Universe. All we know so far is that it will be given away free to comic stores, it will consist of short stories, and it will arrive on the following Wednesday from its announcement. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine.

Movies/TV News
(#1) According to insider sources, Warner Brothers is looking for the Man of Steel sequel to be released in 2014 and Justice
to come out 2015. If true, work on the sequel would have to start fairly soon and Henry Cavill is going to be a very busy man indeed.

(#2) Disney announced that two untitled Marvel Studios films are set for a May 6, 2016 and a May 5, 2017 release date. Doctor Strange? Black Panther? Avengers 3? Let the speculation begin!

(#3) The man that plays Oliver Queen in Arrow, Stephen Amell, recently revealed some interesting news about the show going forward: “They sat me down after my last post-production work for Season One back in Los Angeles and Andrew Kreisberg sat me down and gave me the big pitch and then after I got the pitch he went ‘OK, here’s the game-changer.’ And the game-changer is a ‘game-changer.’ I can’t say specifics but it’s something and some people that aren’t just familiar to DC Comics fans…they’re like…more familiar than Green Arrow.” Batman? Wonder Woman? Superman? Just who could he be referring to? Then came this revelation courtesy of Spoiler TV: “Arrow is currently casting for a new major recurring character/possible series regular for Season 2. Here name is Lisa and is described as a mysterious woman with a tragic past. She will wreak havoc on Oliver’s heart and is equal to Oliver in every way. ‘Lisa’ is probably just a cover name so as to not give away the character’s identity during the casting process. ” I mentioned this a long time ago very early on in Season 1 about how I would introduce Cheshire onto the show and this sounds exactly like it. Is it really her? Season 2 can’t come soon enough!

(#4) Originally, Jack Ryder (the Creeper) was going to make an appearance in Man of Steel but couldn’t due to DC putting their foot down for some reason. Vicki Vale from Batman was then considered but David Goyer eventually went a different route. What could have been…

  1. Its a shame that MJ wont be in ASM2 but I think its a good move to keep the focus on Peter and Gwen. Will be interesting to see what Justice League 3000 will be like, and I’m quite excited by the news that Tom Taylor is taking over Earth 2 as well. I am a little worried about Zero Year overlapping into too many books, it could detract from the overall story. As for Man of Steel… Well, I really enjoyed the film, I thought it was a great new direction for the character and I liked how the origin was done. As for the ending, well, I can see where it would divide fans. I guess time will tell if it was the right move. The people I’ve talked to all really enjoyed the film, might be a good idea for a poll or a special post after everyone has had a chance to see the film and comment about it maybe?

Yeah, I agree considering how many new characters they are already introducing in the film already.

I was surprised to learn that it would actually flow over into other series, especially non-Bat titles.

An excellent idea indeed! In a future Comic Connection (probably Issue #18) I’ve already teed up “which characters you’d liked to see in a future installment”. A post discussing the ending is another great idea.

Thanks for the comments, as always, and have an amazing weekend! 🙂
