In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, TV shows, video games, etc. while also highlighting various Comic Book Cosplay (one female and one male). A really quite week as all the big news seems like it is being saved for the San Diego Comic-Con next week. Let’s begin:
Summer Glau Casting NewsOne of my favourite actresses, Summer Glau (Serenity, Terminator: TSCC, The Cape, Alphas, Dollhouse, The 4400) is joining the cast of The CW’s hit show Arrow. Much more than a guest-star, Summer is actually going to be a recurring character. Who is she playing you ask? A fairly new character that debuted in the Green Arrow comics in 2010, Isabel Rochev. Isabel is “the beautiful and dangerous Vice President of Acquisitions for Stellmoor International, a company seeking to take over Queen Consolidated. Per DC lore, Isabel fancies herself a bit of a rightful heir to the Queen family business, and as such she will be eager to get Ollie out of her way.” Look for her to debut in the season premiere in October. Looks like “Summer” is going to carry over into the Fall this year!
The League of Extraordinary Television StarsThe League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are looking to come to the small screen. Michael Green is currently at work on the pilot television script and would also serve as the showrunner if the series is picked up. For those that know nothing about the comic, imagine a team of literary genre characters such as Allan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, Mina Harker, and Doctor Jekyll/Mr. Hyde teaming up to battle different threats to humanity. Funny enough, the movie based on the comic came out 10 years ago this week. According to Variety: “20th Century Fox TV will produce the project, and the commitment from Fox marks 20th’s first significant drama sale for the forthcoming development season. The project also marks Fox’s first serious foray in the graphic novel/comic book realm, one that ABC is testing this fall with Marvel series SHIELD.” The Hollywood Reporter added: “The series is being developed with a ‘put pilot’ deal in place. This means that there will be a financial penalty to pay if the show doesn’t go to air.” My fingers are crossed for this show to actually happen unlike the failed Locke & Key pilot from all those years ago.
(#1) DC’s October solicitations were released this week but rumor has it that the list of titles is not complete. Expect an announcement or two at the Con…
No notable non-Movie/TV Show news from Marvel this week.
(#1) The website, the UK’s Den of Geek, claim they know the identities of the characters that Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, and Lee Pace are playing in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. (Highlight for SPOILERS) Del Toro is going to play the Collector, Gillian will be Nebula, and Pace is none other than Ronan the Accuser. (End of SPOILERS) Confirmation is most likely going to come at Comic-Con.
(#2) The second season premiere of the TV show Arrow will utilize a time skip. How far after the season one finale we’ll be is anyone’s guess though I’ll make my prediction and say it will probably be 3 months.
(#3) Vin Diesel is at it again! His latest Facebook posting read: “Marvel meeting today… Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed… P.s. Thanks to Our page, for pushing to make it happen…you know I get tunnel vision with my work… and after that meeting today…wow!” Alongside his posting was a picture of the actor standing next to a framed cover of the second issue of the original Avengers comic series. Avengers 2 anyone? And the use of the word “vision” could be yet another possible hint in regards to the identity of the character he might be playing.
(#4) In the last edition of #Trending I talked about the possibility of a third Hellboy movie and how there were some hurdles in making it happen. Well consider one of those obstacles nonexistent. Legendary Pictures (the studio that wants to make Hellboy 3) are teaming up with Universal Pictures (the studio that holds the rights to Hellboy). Now we just need Del Toro’s Pacific Rim movie to have a big office and we’re even closer to seeing this franchise finally get a much deserved final film!
And that concludes #Trending. Thoughts on any subjects discussed? Anything else worth mentioning? Comment below!
