#Trending In The World Of Comics: 08/01/13-08/07/13 (A Shortage of 3D, Batman Casting Rumors, & Other News)

In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, TV shows, video games, etc. while also highlighting various Comic Book Cosplay (one female and one male). Let’s begin:

DC’s 3D Problemcomics-forever-evilWe already knew that the cost of making those 3D covers for Villains Month was more expensive, more time consuming, and that the print runs were going to be set, but now we have learned that there are going to be a lot of disappointed people. Dan DiDio revealed the following: “All 3D cover issues for September are sold out at the distributor level, orders on the Villain’s Month issues will be allocated, DC will also ship standard edition cover versions on the same day as the 3D cover versions for a dollar less, Retailers need to start ordering these 2D covers this week, there will be a special Villains Month 3-D Motion Complete Set which will have all the covers in second print for $199.99, the allocation will be set to match previous store’s selling patterns in order to avoid those who suddenly now ratchet up orders in the knowledge they’ll be allocated, titles will range from 50% allocation on some books with retailers getting half what were ordered to nearly 100% where retailers will get almost all they ordered, and Retailers will be informed how many books they are getting in time to order 2D replacement copies.” I’m crossing my fingers right now as I hope for a lucky break coming my way…

Who Shall Play Batman?batmanZack Snyder has begun the long process of casting an actor to play Batman in the 2015 Batman/Superman movie. Some of the actors in the mix are Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Joe Manganiello, Richard Armitage, Max Martini, Matthew Goode, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Gerald Butler. Their ages run the gauntlet from 32 to 47 which tells us that he is definitely looking for an older Batman. Sources say: “The character’s on-screen age will be late 30s or around the 40 mark. He will be established and rugged. This new movie will not seek to recount an origin story or the rise of the Dark Knight. The movie is aiming for the tone of his relationship and conflict with Superman to be on par with The Dark Knight Returns.” Personally, I want to stay clear of a Batman that is in his 40s as this would mean that we’d need to cast another Batman before his eventual trilogy ever gets made or have him be recast mid-stream. 25-32 works for me but I have to stress that this is all early discussion anyways.

DC News
Scott Snyder revealed that Bat-Villain Professor Pyg might show up in a future issue of Batman but Poison Ivy is definitely going to appear during Zero Year. He also revealed that the original plan for Death Of The Family was that the Joker was going to cut-off Alfred’s hand and send it to Batman. Yeah, I’m really glad that didn’t happen.

(#2) We also learned that Andy Diggle’s original plan for Superman in his Action Comics run was going to see the hero lose his arm but he would eventually regrow it back. Maybe it was for the best that his run ended abruptly after all?

(#3) Tony Daniel said that both Doomsday and Zod will appear in Wonder Woman/Superman.

(#4) The newest DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us was officially revealed as none other than the mistress of magic herself, Zatanna. All I can say is…hell yes!

Marvel News

(#1) Apparently, the X-Men: Battle Of The Atom crossover is running behind and it’s not the artists to blame. The scripts are coming slower than anticipated in large part due to the troubles with time travel, leaving the artists to play catch-up. Frank Cho especially is doing his best and it’s really wearing him down as at one point he had to draw fifteen pages in a ten day span, a span that would normally see him complete five to six. Hopefully this rush doesn’t hamper the quality…

Movies/TV News
(#1) Jeff Wadlow shared some more info about the script he is currently writing for the X-Force movie: “I can’t really say much as Fox has asked me not to but, again, it’s not a reboot or reimagining of the X cinematic universe. Tonally it will fit in, quite well with all the other movies… but then I think the other movies cover a wide range of tones. I think it will be a little edgier, I think you’ll see some characters with different takes on what it means to be a mutant. There will be some grey areas that the movies haven’t yet explored. I’m going to take some big ideas from the X-universe and flip them, I think in an interesting way. make an X-Force movie, who’s interested? Here’s what the movie’s going to be.” Nothing too much that we didn’t already know though.

(#2) Staying with the X-Verse, we learned some more info regarding X-Men: Days of Future Past and beyond from director Bryan Singer himself: Scarlet Witch will not be joining her brother in the film, all of Quicksilver’s scenes where he displays his power of speed will be shot in 3600 frames per second to help with the effect, and that after the release of this movie Singer will be working on a “Marvel Universe mash-up” film which really makes it seem that we’re going to see the Fantastic Four and the X-Men crossover. Whoa!

(#3) Actor Miles Teller (Rabbit Hole) is the frontrunner for the role of Reed Richards in the new Fantastic Four reboot according to various sources.

(#4) With the failed Showtime pilot in the distant past, comic book property Chew is now looking to be made into “an animated adaptation of the comic for digital and home video, while developing a live-action series for television.” Double the Chew equals double the pleasure. Hopefully this turns out better than the last time…

(#5) When questioned as to why Thanos is not the main villain of the Avengers movie sequel, Joss Whedon had this to say: “We have to stay grounded. It’s part of what makes the Marvel universe click — their relationship to the real world. It’s science fiction, and Thanos is not out of the mix, but Thanos was never meant to be the next villain. He’s always been the overlord of villainy and darkness.”

(#6) The Walking Dead TV show is going to be getting a new threat in Season 4: “It’s a force that you can’t just stab in the face, you can’t talk reason to. Possibly the most deadly threat that they’ve faced thus far. They’re still going to be dealing with the zombies, they’re still very much a threat. They’re still going to be dealing with humans, that’s still very much a threat. But there’s a new element thrown in, this new unseen force that is going to be extremely dangerous and possibly more dangerous than anything.” Let the speculation begin!

(#7) Rumors are swirling that DC and Warner Bros want to create a Gotham Central TV series that would take place in between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. It would “offer a glimpse into the efforts of the Gotham City Police Department to keep a handle on crime in Batman’s absence.” If this turns out to be true…I’ll be a very happy man.

(#8) Tom Hiddleston was asked if he would be open to appearing on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show. His response: “It would be something that would depend upon script and story but yeah, of course. I’ve spoken to Whedon about it. I saw him down in San Diego. I hear it’s good fun.” Coulson VS Loki: Round 2 anyone?

  1. These are the comic books I read in July 2014:

    Punisher Vol. 6 # 25 – 30
    X # 14
    Superman/Wonder Woman # 9
    The Punisher # 7
    Green Arrow # 33
    The Punisher # 8
    Superman/Wonder Woman # 10
    Deadpool vs Carnage # 4
    Swamp Thing # 23.1: Arcane
    Swamp Thing # 24
    Swamp Thing Annual # 2
    The Phantom Stranger # 11 – 12
    Daredevil # 34
    Superboy # 24
    That’s Because You’re a Robot (One – Shot)
    Mighty Avengers # 11
    Cinder and Ashe TP

The Slavers story arc (Punisher Vol. 6 # 25 – 30) is the best read of the month.
The Punisher # 7 is my favorite new comic book of the month. Silver medal for Daredevil # 34, which is one of the best Daredevil stories I’ve read in years. If I had to choose basing myself only on the art, Swamp Thing Annual # 2 would have won the gold medal hands down.
July 2014 was my 2nd month ever as a blogger: I got 2069 visits and 769 visitors (I got very close to the record of 772). I also got 96 new followers.
What about you? Was July a good month for you as a reader and as a blogger?

    • “The Punisher # 7 is my favorite new comic book of the month.”
And thanks again for the review!

“Silver medal for Daredevil # 34, which is one of the best Daredevil stories I’ve read in years.”
High praise indeed coming from a Daredevil aficionado such as yourself.

      “That’s Because You’re a Robot (One – Shot)”
I picked that issue up as well but have not had the time to read it yet. It looked like it would be a fun one-and-done comic. What were your thoughts?

“July 2014 was my 2nd month ever as a blogger: I got 2069 visits and 769 visitors (I got very close to the record of 772). I also got 96 new followers.”
It is amazing how you keep on piling up the followers. Congrats on the month.

“Was July a good month for you as a reader and as a blogger?”
July was a fantastic month on The Speech Bubble. I’m proud to say that not only did it feature my second best single day record but beat all my previous records in total monthly views, total visitors, and average per day to make July 2014 my best month ever. Thanks for asking and for the support. 🙂

      • “What were your thoughts?” It was a very zany comic book. The more I went on reading it, the less I could understand its plot. If I could turn back time, I wouldn’t order it.
“It is amazing how you keep on piling up the followers.” I got almost all of them in the last days of the July. I don’t know what happened.
“July was a fantastic month on The Speech Bubble.” I figured it, because you published a lot of Retroactive posts, and we deeply appreciated that.
“Thanks for asking and for the support.” Thank you as well for your reply! : )
