On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 08/14/13

Radar

In this feature I’ll highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Avengers Arena #13
Avengers Arena #13
Creative Team
Christos Gage and Karl Moline
Solicitation
“Hank Pym searches for the kidnapped Avengers Academy students. . . By the special guest creative team of AVENGERS ACADEMY‘s Christos Gage and Karl Moline!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Avengers Academy used to be one of my Top 3 comics that Marvel was producing when it ended its run to be replaced by this series. It was a great title with a ton of fantastic character beats and an engaging cast that didn’t have to resort to killing each other off each month. So I’m completely over the moon that the creative team from that series is reuniting here and I can hold out hope that when this series ends, Marvel will have the right sense to revive the former title and bring this team back on an ongoing basis. I can dream, right?

Infinity #1
Infinity #1 (of 6)
Creative Team
Jonathan Hickman and Jim Cheung
Solicitation
“The oversized kickoff to the year’s most anticipate Blockbuster summer event, changing the way you view the Marvel Universe! The outbreak of war on two fronts: Earth and Space, with our heroes torn between them. The world-shattering return of Thanos!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
NEW SERIES ALERT! Marvel’s next “Big Event” comic officially kicks off here. With Hickman on board we are guaranteed to get a mind-blowing (albeit possibly confusing) story while Cheung will deliver some phenomenal art to back it all up. After Age of Ultron utterly disappointed me, I’m confident that Marvel will rebound with this event. At least, I believe so…

Mind The Gap #12
Mind The Gap #12 (Cover A - Esquejo)
Creative Team
Jim McAnn and Sami Basri
Solicitation

“‘OUT OF BODIES,’ Part Two. Elle’s shattered mind stitches back together with an unexpected twist- the FULL memory of her attack! Meanwhile, someone realizes they have played a far more integral role in Elle’s situation than they knew. Plus ‘The Fifth’ is revealed! The two-part arc wraps up, setting the stage for the most unexpected twist yet!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Elle regaining “the full memory of her attack?” This is big. If you’ve been following this series, you are right there with me in anticipation and the tease of an “unexpected twist” is just the cherry on top. For those that haven’t read this series, this event’s importance wouldn’t make sense. To those I just have to say “Why aren’t you reading this series?”

Smallville Season 11 #16
Smallville Season 11 #16
Creative Team
Bryan Q. Miller and Jorge Jimenez
Solicitation
“‘Olympus,’ part 1! Twenty years ago, a young boy washed up on a mysterious island and met a princess. Now, that princess has come to look for the mother who disappeared when she took the boy back. But if Smallville is prepared for strange beings, Washington, DC, certainly is not!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
“When is Batman going to show up on Smallville?” It was the #1 question that was asked year in and year out with the end result being: never (at least until this series came into being). What was the #2 question? “When is Wonder Woman going to show up on Smallville?” With the release of this latest issue the answer is now. Seeing how Smallville will interpret her is an interesting prospect and one that should provide for a highly entertaining new arc.

Wolverine and the X-Men #34
Wolverine and the X-Men #34
Creative Team

Jason Aaron and Nick Bradshaw
Solicitation
“THE HELLFIRE SAGA CONCLUDES! Wolverine and the X-Men face Mystique, Sabretooth and the Hellfire Club! What fate awaits the Jean Grey School students who joined the New Hellions? The WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN landscape is redefined!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Everything that Jason Aaron has been building up to since his first issue comes to a close here. How will it all end? How will this series be “redefined?” What fate will befall the Hellfire Club? Will Broo regain his senses? Will Quire save the day? All these questions and more await to be answered!

  1. “After Age of Ultron utterly disappointed me” That’s because you probably didn’t read my review of it over on Beyond the Gamer. If you had, you’d understand why it was actually a good story. And if you read this comment, you’ll understand that I am a shameless whore.

You pick Arena as something you’re excited about, and then you don’t go with the great cover of Molly’s poster. Tsk tsk. I hate Arena, but that cover is just awesome. The X-23 one is OK. But it lacks the brilliance of the Missing Persons cover.

As far as what I’m looking forward to: Fearless Defenders, Uncanny X-Force, Uncanny X-Men. That’s what I’ll be buying. Even if going back to Will Sliney’s art is going to be tough after Stephanie Hans spoiled me. Ah, why couldn’t she be the permanent artist on that book? Or any book, really. Marvel, if you put Stephanie Hans on a book, I will buy it.

Ha ha! I’ll have to check it out.

I went with the X-23 one because for this feature I just use the covers TFAW.com provides. That is the one they decided to show. I agree Molly’s is better though.

“Marvel, if you put Stephanie Hans on a book, I will buy it.”
After last issue, I’m right with you in that regards.
