On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 08/21/13

Radar

In this feature I’ll highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Batman ’66 #2
Batman 66 #2
Creative Team
Jeff Parker and Ruben Procopio
Solicitation
“From the sands of time and halls of higher learning comes one of Batman’s deadliest foes: King Tut! Tut returns to assert his royal status and challenge the Dynamic Duo with his most far-reaching plan yet to rule the modern Thebes, Gotham City! Also in this issue, doors smash in and jaws crack from the fists of the newest tough in town: introducing the 1966 incarnation of that reptilian rogue Killer Croc! How can Batman battle this brawny brute?”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
This series is as serious blast from the past, a series that brings back fond memories for me of watching it on reruns as a kid. The return of King Tut is upon us but what really has me excited is seeing how the creative team tackles Killer Croc by rendering him how he would have been like if he actually debuted on the 1966 TV show. This reinterpretation is hopefully just the start of many more to come as adding spins to classic Bat-Foes along with appearances of fan favourites from the TV show will help this series thrive and thrill.

Daredevil #30
Daredevil #30
Creative Team
Mark Waid and Chris Samnee
Solicitation

“When soars the Silver Surfer! What weird menace unites Daredevil with the Cosmic Rider of the Spaceways?”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Daredevil teaming up with the Silver Surfer? Need I really say more?

Superior Spider-Man #16
Superior Spider-Man #16
Creative Team
Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos
Solicitation

“‘Run, Goblin, Run!’ Part 2 of 2. How has the Hobgoblin evaded the Superior Spider-Man for so long? And does that hold the key to the Superior Spider-Man’s greatest success–or greatest failure? It’s the end of the line for Hobgoblin, and possibly an end for a big chapter in the history of Spider-Man.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Phil Urich was not in the best of positions at the end of the previous issue and by looking at this cover things don’t seem to be getting any better for him. But would they really kill him off? Or is it just one big fake out? I’m on the edge of my seat hoping more for the later than the former but if Slott has taught us anything: don’t take anything on face value, there’s always a twist waiting around the corner. Here’s hoping that the twist saves Phil even if it means he’s no longer the Hobgoblin after this issue sees its conclusion.

Venom #39
Venom #39
Creative Team
Cullen Bunn and Pepe Larraz
Solicitation
“Venom’s secret identity is discovered! And not by whom you’d expect! A hit has been taken out on Venom’s life–and cold-blooded killers are crawling out of the woodwork to collect! Even in tough times, every super hero needs a sidekick, right?”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Venom has a sidekick? The end of last issue brought us the starling origin of Venom’s reluctant new sidekick and seeing this new dynamic play out will definitely produce some interesting developments. Bringing back Jack O’Lantern was another inspired choice and tying him into her origin only helps further him as Agent Venom’s #1 foe. Going forward, my excitement levels are at an all-time high as this series has really found its stride with a nice mixture of super hero and alter ego storytelling. How will Venom and his sidekick get along? What will her reaction be to this new phase of her life? The answer’s await us here!

Wonder Woman #23
Wonder Woman #23
Creative Team

Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang
Solicitation
“Wonder Woman had no choice but to abandon London to the bloodthirsty First Born–but now it’s time to take the city back! If Diana is truly War’s greatest student, then now is the time to prove it!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
We’ve been building to this moment for a while and now the moment is upon us: First Born VS Wonder Woman. It should be one epic knock-out brawl that will be beautifully rendered by the artistic skills of Chiang. It will have to take some creativity and skill on Wonder Woman’s part to defeat this seemingly unstoppable foe and I can’t wait to see how her (and her allies) triumph in the end. Or will they?
