On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 08/28/13

Radar

In this feature I’ll highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Deadpool #15
Deadpool #15
Creative Team
Brian Posehn, Gerry Duggan, and Declan Shalvey
Solicitation
“‘The Good, the Bad & the Ugly,’ Part 1 of 5. Deadpool’s past in the Weapon X program comes back to haunt him. . . . . .so he calls in help from WOLVERINE & CAPTAIN AMERICA!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Deadpool’s quality looks to be getting a shot in the arm with this first issue of a new 5-part storyline. Declan Shalvey amazed me with his artistic run on Venom and now he turns his skills to this series. Combine that with Deadpool teaming-up with Wolverine and Captain America and him dealing with his Weapon X past and you get the start of one hell of a promising arc.

FF #11
FF #11
Creative Team
Matt Fraction and Mike Allred
Solicitation

“Purple! Green! IMPOSSIBLETOWN!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Zaniness! Humor! The Impossible Man! That is exactly what we are going to get here with this issue. This one should be just plain fun, just plain out there, and just plain awesome. I really needn’t say more!

The Flash #23
Flash #23
Creative Team
Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul
Solicitation

“The Flash makes a desperate play to save Iris from Reverse-Flash–and you can’t be sure who will be left standing by this issue’s end!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
It’s a giant mystery that needs to be solved: who is the Reverse-Flash? Well, this is the issue where we find out the answer. Is he a twisted version of Barry? Dr. Elias? Daniel West? Wally West? Eobard Thawne? Hunter Zolomon? Someone else entirely? At one point I even threw Iris onto the list of suspects but I highly doubt it now…or are they pulling one big swerve on me? Regardless, I can’t wait to discover, along with everyone else, his/her identity and origin. Flash fact: prepare to have your jaw drop with the reveal!

Justice League #23
Justice League #23
Creative Team
Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis
Solicitation
“TRINITY WAR CHAPTER 6! Trinity War concludes! But that doesn’t mean all ends well for our heroes. The secret behind Pandora’s Box is revealed and it means the end of the Justice Leagues!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
This right here is going to kick-off Forever Evil and Villain’s Month was also serving as the Trinity War crossover’s concluding chapter. The Justice League will end! Villains will run amok! Pandora’s Box has its mysteries illuminated! And we’ve already been spoiled of a certain villainous group making their debut here. This looks to be an epic and satisfying conclusion if I ever saw one.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #25
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #25
Creative Team

Tom Waltz and Mateus Santolouco
Solicitation
“‘CITY FALL’ part 4: City Fall continues as Shredder reveals his new second-in-command: Leonardo! While the underworld readies their armies, the Turtles must come together if they have any hope of saving their brother. Don’t miss this landmark 25th issue that sees the launch of a full-scale war on New York City! The Savate, Foot Clan, and Slash are all back – along with a couple of shocking special guests!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Leonardo has joined the Shredder, the Turtles are at an all-time low, and all-out war looks to erupt on the city streets. The tease of “a couple shocking special guests” is all the more intriguing and really gets our minds racing trying to figure out who they could possibly mean. Beyond the story, we’re also going to be treated with art from Mateus Santolouco who is simply rocking it on this series and I never want to see leave. “City Fall” looks to ramp up everything to the 10th degree with its latest chapter as this series is flying on all cylinders to its eventual, bombastic conclusion.

  1. Captain Marvel, Journey Into Mystery, Uncanny X-Men and Young Avengers for me. And My Little Pony.

Who knows, maybe Deadpool won’t suck this week. Maybe Posehn and Duggan will stop treating the character like a clown, and start showing his tragic side. But honestly, I really don’t expect much. The series has been abysmal from the start, full of pathetic attempts at humour, with nothing even approaching cleverness. I don’t expect this arc to be anything more than a begrudging “look he can be serious” thing that still shows a poor understanding of the character.

    • The two best issues of this series for me have been the “inventory issues” where we flashback to a different era while maintaining the illusion that it was actually written all those years ago and is just now seeing the light of day. Otherwise, it has definitely been hit and miss…

I hope you’re wrong but I have a inkling that you aren’t. Regardless, it will most assuredly have some terrific art from Shalvey!

      • I found both the flashback issues to be uninspired. They’re clearly meant to be an homage to the class Deadpool #11, where Deadpool actually goes back and experiences an Amazing Spider-Man comic from the ’60s. But where the old issue lovingly poked fun at the old stories, the new ones are just making references to things. There’s nothing as brilliant as Deadpool being horrified at the hairstyles of the Osborns, or Blind Al thinking Mary Jane was a drug-addicted moron.
