Retroactive: Detective Comics 1985 & Amazing Spider-Man 2009

In Retroactive I’ll take you on a visual comic cover tour of the past covering all the covers for a particular series. Each entry will cover an entire year and I’ll always have one comic from DC and one comic from Marvel. At the end of each edition of Retroactive I’ll select my overall favourite cover for that year for each series. Last time on Retroactive we covered Detective Comics 1984 and Amazing Spider-Man 2008. If you need a refresher, just click HERE. Below you’ll find the two series that I’m currently covering. Click on that specific logo to be instantly taken directly to that series. The last section is reserved for my Top Picks from each year. Click the logo or travel to the third page to view them.

  1. My favorite Batman cover is Detective Comics # 554. Green Arrow + Black Canary + a wonderful tribute to Nightwing’s first appearance as Robin… yes, it definitely deserves the gold medal.
As for Spidey, the cover you chose is extraordinary, but I pick ASM # 604. This cover conveys so much dynamism, the anatomy is so perfect, the flaming sky ties in with Mary Jane’s hair so well… this cover should be framed and put in the MOMA. And I don’t say this frequently: I praised a cover so much only once, when I talked about the cover for Angel & Faith # 16.

A nice homage, for sure. My runner-up would be #547. I know you hate gimmicks but looking at that cover, seeing Batman unmask, and the reactions on everyone’s faces leaves me wanting to track it down and see just who is dressed as Batman!

WOW! Your passion really comes across. It’s a great cover (there are so many this year) but I’d like to make special mention of #576 (love the shot of Spider-Man’s fist delivering that brutal blow to Hammerhead), #587 (my runner-up and an overall great visual), and #601 & #607 by the great J Scott Campbell (he know how to draw the female form). But who would win in a battle: this one or Angel & Faith’s?

      Thanks for sharing your selections!

  2. Great choice for covers, Detective #546 makes excellent use of light. I really like ASM #593 as well, very clever use of perspective and like what they did with the logo. To top it all Spiderman is enjoying a nice cuppa coffee as well! Just think how awesome this cover would look if it was done with the 3D Villains month effect!
