Retroactive: Detective Comics 1986 & Amazing Spider-Man 2010

In Retroactive I’ll take you on a visual comic cover tour of the past covering all the covers for a particular series. Each entry will cover an entire year and I’ll always have one comic from DC and one comic from Marvel. At the end of each edition of Retroactive I’ll select my overall favourite cover for that year for each series. Last time on Retroactive we covered Detective Comics 1985 and Amazing Spider-Man 2009. If you need a refresher, just click HERE. Below you’ll find the two series that I’m currently covering. Click on that specific logo to be instantly taken directly to that series. The last section is reserved for my Top Picks from each year. Click the logo or travel to the third page to view them.

  1. You know how much I love well defined backgrounds, so of course I agree with you that Detective Comics # 567 is the best cover of the year.
MY runner – up is Detective Comics # 565, because it seems to have a whodunit plot.
Special mention also for Detective Comics # 561: as you know, I hate generic covers that don’t give us any clue about the content of the issue, but this image is so striking that it thoroughly deserves to get the bronze medal anyway.
As for Spidey, when I saw ASM # 610, I instantly understood it would have won the gold medal. The composition, the light effects, the use of the digital colouring… everything in this cover is pure awesomeness. Ok, it doesn’t have a real background, but this time I will turn a blind eye to this major flaw.
Special mention for ASM # 638, because of its amazing light effects.

Who is…the Love Killer? What a name!

That is a great image. My runner-up would be #566. Love that image of Batman in the doorway, the portraits of his most heinous villains adorning the walls.

That’s a beautiful cover as is #639 from the Wedding Cake toppers to the knife cutting into it and oozing out a substance resembling blood. Quite ominous!

If I was forced to choose a single cover only this year it would be #612. Not only does it feature one of my favourite Spidey villains but it is just plain awesome. From the way Spider-Man’s mask fills the city’s sky to the reflection of Electro is his eye to the lightning bolt dancing through the centre to the dark city below, it captures the individual crown for me!

Thanks for sharing your selections! Hard to believe there are only two more Retroactives left for Spider-Man…

      • “If I was forced to choose a single cover only this year it would be #612.” It could be (or at least inspire) the poster for the next Spider – movie! : )
“Thanks for sharing your selections! Hard to believe there are only two more Retroactives left for Spider-Man…” And I’m anxious to know who’s going to replace him! Thank you as well for your reply, and most of all for publishing a new Retroactive post so early, it’s been a delightful surprise! : )

Well this month is all about celebrating my first year. I’m choosing a feature each week and honoring it by posting five or so consecutive entries. That means for the next three days you’ll be getting three more Retroactives! Hope you enjoy!
