#Trending In The World Of Comics: 09/26/13-10/09/13 (Arrow’s Future, Finding Somone “Fantastic”, & Other News)

In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, TV shows, video games, etc. while also highlighting various Comic Book Cosplay (one female and one male). Let’s begin:

Arrow Takes Aim To The Future7c5b0-arrow_header1Guggengeim and Kreisberg (the creative minds behind Arrow) were talking about the possibility of seeing the Birds of Prey form on the show: “We have an idea for how to do our version of Birds of Prey. When you think about it, we have a lot of pieces. It’s a lot like the Suicide Squad. As we continue to populate our world with new characters and some returning people from last year, you start to go, ‘We’re really close to that!’ We saw this awesome bit of production art for a new set that we realized plays into Birds of Prey completely. Our Art Department wasn’t even intending that! There’s certainly a momentum towards that, but everything has to happen in due time. With respect to Birds of Prey specifically, there’s an actress that we particularly need to make that piece work and we need to check on her availability.” With that tease at the back of our minds, we also got treated to two casting announcements: Dylan Neal (Cedar Cove) and Jimmy Jean-Louis (Heroes). Dylan will be playing the character of Dr. Anthony Ivo who is described as “a brutal but ruthless scientist who will stop at nothing to unearth a breakthrough that dates back to the latter days of World War II.” Jimmy will play a character simply known as the Captain who is “a mysterious and deadly associate of Anthony Ivo, and has a connection to a mystery of Season 2 called the ‘Amazo’ — which will be a familiar name to DC Comics fans.” What a sec! Amazo? The deadly android Amazo? Yeah, this show just keeps getting better and better.

The continuing search for the lead roles of the Fantastic Four reboot are coming to an end. Michael B. Jordan is still the only viable contender for Johnny Storm but as for the role of his sister, Susan Storm, the actresses in consideration are down to three: Saoirse Ronan (The Host), Kate Mara (American Horror Story), and Margot Robbie (Neighbours). While there are no frontrunners for the Thing, the same cannot be said for Reed Richards who are also down to three as well: Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Miles Teller (Divergent), and Jack O’Connell (300: Rise of an Empire). With the show shooting for a 2015 release and the script still needing re-writes there is a lot more work needing to be done before a single frame is shot.

DC News
With Villain’s Month concluded, we are already turning our attention to next year’s September event. The current plan looks to see each title jump ahead 5 years into the future, similar to the previous used One Year Later concept. Like that event, Five Years Later will birth a weekly comic afterwards rumored to include Brian Azzarello, Dan Jurgens, and Robert Venditti on the creative team.

(#2) Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato are leaving The Flash series but going to stick together on a new one. That we already knew but now we know which series they are going to next: Detective Comics. Brilliant art is 100% guaranteed!

(#3) Justice League Dark, The Phantom Stranger, Constantine, and Pandora are going to engage in an 18-Part crossover staring with Justice League Dark #24. It will introduce a new DC bad guy named Blight and star John Constantine. The event is described as follows: “Constantine will refuse to believe that his teammates – particularly Zatanna – are dead. Therefore, he casts a spell to locate them … but his search is quickly blocked by a dominant force within the metaphysical world. It seems that the Crime Syndicate’s invasion has significantly enhanced the levels of evil in the universe, and that this evil has a physical manifestation: Blight. In order to save Zatanna, Constantine will be forced to take on Blight. Along with Swamp Thing, Nightmare Nurse, and the Trinity of Sin themselves – Pandora, Phantom Stranger, and The Question – Constantine will need to defeat Blight if he wants to ever see the woman he loves again. But when Blight becomes aware of Constantine’s quest and draws in a human host to take him down, will Constantine and the army he’s assembled be enough to battle a force that encapsulates all the evil in the world?” I only get one of these series currently (JLD) and this giant crossover doesn’t compel me to get the rest either…

Marvel News

(#1) Jennifer Walters (She Hulk) is getting a solo title once again. Coming to us February 2014, the creative team was revealed to be Charles Soule and Javier Pulido. Marvel describes it as follows: “With a brand new practice, new paralegal, and a mounting number of personal enemies both super-powered and not, She-Hulk may have bitten off a bit more than she can chew…but hey, she just calls that Tuesday.” Soule (who actually runs his own legal firm in real life) added: “One of the things I want to explore is the fact that she wants to be exceptional at everything she does, but that’s not always possible. You can spread yourself too thin. She’ll be out on her own, without much of a support group at first, a total underdog trying to make good. I love stories like that — Jen’s going to be very easy to root for.” Consider me very interested!

Movies/TV News
(#1) FOX signed a first-look movie deal with Independent publisher BOOM! and their imprint Archaia Entertainment. Apparently “BOOM! will get first-dollar gross on the movies made from its properties, with those earnings being split 50-50 between the publisher and the adapted comic’s creator(s).”

(#2) NBC and DC are developing a Constantine TV show from the minds of David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone. Deadline reports: “Warner Bros. TV and DC Comics are on a roll this development season with a third high-profile project. Constantine, a drama based on the characters in DC Comics’ John Constantine stories, has sold to NBC with penalty. It is written/executive produced by The Mentalist executive producer Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer, the go-to writer for Warner Bros.’ feature DC adaptations. Constantine centers on John Constantine, an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond.” First Flash, then Gotham, now Constantine? Say what you will about their lack of movies but DC is going full-steam ahead on the small screen!

(#3) Samuel L Jackson was discussing the Avengers movie sequel: “I don’t think we begin shooting before March of next year. I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. Elizabeth Olsen, but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.” Some fans are taken this as confirmation that Elizabeth Olsen has indeed won the role of the Scarlet Witch but time will only tell if they are correct.

(#4) According to sources, Ben Affleck is campaigning for his friend and neighbor Larry David to play a role in Superman VS Batman. It is suggested that “the pair chatted about the idea with earnest abandon throughout the course of Emmy weekend. Larry has long been courted by the big budget superhero industrial complex, being linked to roles in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man sequels nearly a decade ago. But Ben is somebody he trusts and enjoys spending time with and this could be the right situation for Larry to finally appear in a huge-grossing hit film. Fun speculation that it could be for the famed Superman enemy role of Mister Mxyzptlk could make this piece more exciting, since Larry is a dead ringer for the character. Ben and his personality are taking over this whole production — he could come out of this with a producer credit.” Mxyzptlk? I think not. But the potential for another role is there.

(#5) Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show features a villainous group called the Rising Tide. It turns out that there is a real activist group by the same name out there and they have launched a petition to ask Disney to change the group’s name. They feel they will be seen as cyber-terrorists in real life, already getting attacked on social media by fans.

  1. I can’t believe how many work Soule is getting both from DC and Marvel Comics. Could you list all the series he’s writing or will write in the future?
Speaking of Soule’s comics, a review of Superman/Wonder Woman # 1 (http://retcon-punch.com/2013/10/11/supermanwonder-woman-1/) made me think that this series is character – driven and full of slice – of – life moments, so, despite the fact that I don’t give a damn about both its leading characters, I decided to add it to my pull list. What about you? Will you give it a try?

    • “Could you list all the series he’s writing or will write in the future?”
Thunderbolts, She-Hulk, Superman/Batman, Swamp Thing, Red Lanterns, Green Lanterns, and Letter 44. Crazy! How does one man do it all?

“What about you? Will you give it a try?”
Yes. I picked it up…and thought it was good. It didn’t blow me away though the art was fantastic. A nice almost even split of normal and heroic life for the two characters. I’ll see how this series progresses…
