My favorite Bat – cover is Detective Comics # 656. Some cops are trying to fill Batman with lead: he usually has a very self – confident attitude, but in this case he’s so frightened that he’s about to put his head between his knees. This cover is a double shock: you’re shocked because of the policemen shooting Batman, but also because of Bruce being so scared.
I also love the perspective leaning to the left, the flaming sky, the contrast between light and dark… I usually don’t like Sam Kieth at all, but this cover is a real work of art.
As for Matt, I pick Daredevil # 47, because of its dynamism and its unusual perspective.

It is definitely intriguing and it succeeded in making me to want to find out more about the issue. The artist really has a unique styling to his drawing as well ranging from his depiction of the guns firing to Batman’s cape looking like I’ve never seen it before. My runner-up would have to be #668 for two reasons: the shock value of seeing this new Batman attacking Robin and the homage to #664.

The common theme this week for you: unique angles that grab your attention.
Thanks, as always, for sharing your selections!
Thank you as well for your replies! : )
The backdrop for Daredevil #45 cover is quite stunning, love how he’s swinging from the torch hand of the statue of liberty. The contrast in styles between the comic color drawing and what I assume is a photo in the background is something that I haven’t seen before.
I agree. This may be the first instance of the photo/art combo and a technique that I can’t recall being used too much over the decades, at least to my knowledge. I love said contrast though as it really makes the drawings stand out.
Love your choices, they are brilliant! I would choose Detective #663 fro my Batman cover, with Batman in the raging water with rats scurrying across his cowl, such a scary image. Even Batman looks scared and pushed to the limit! For Daredevil I would choose #38 with Doctor Dooms mask on the cover, and Daredevil’s image reflected on it, really clever. Love these old Daredevil covers, they are so good! Have a great weekend!

It’s a technique that has been used many times over the years yet I’m still a sucker for it. This was my runner-up for Daredevil this week and it really came down to the wire as to which one I would select. Regardless, I truly wonder which was the first comic to come up with the idea? Also, thanks for sharing your selections! 🙂
Yes, I’ve often wondered which comic used the reflection in the mask first. Its a great effect, and when its done well like this, its really effective. Really enjoying looking at all the Daredevil covers again.
That’s the beautiful thing about the Retroactive feature: reminiscing and reviving interest in comics from long ago.
Yes, that’s why I like the feature so much, its great fun
I’ve always loved #659 — I love images of heroes in peril, I guess. #656 is great for the same reason. By contrast, I’ve always thought #660 was a bit odd — is there not something odd about Robin’s face? That’s a Sam Keith one, right? He was like Skottie Young before Skottie Young — which is to say, really good but persistently annoying.

I know exactly what you mean.
Speaking of heroes in peril…you forgot to mention #664: Batman at the mercy of Bane. The illusion of peril turned out to be a reality with this issue. Also, thanks for sharing your choices!
