Retroactive: The Flash 1965 & Uncanny X-Men 1969

In Retroactive I’ll take you on a visual comic cover tour of the past covering all the covers for a particular series. Each entry will cover an entire year and I’ll always have one comic from DC and one comic from Marvel. At the end of each edition of Retroactive I’ll select my overall favourite cover for that year for each series. Last time on Retroactive we covered The Flash 1964 and Uncanny X-Men 1968. If you need a refresher, just click HERE. Below you’ll find the two series that I’m currently covering. Click on that specific logo to be instantly taken directly to that series. The last section is reserved for my Top Picks from each year. Click the logo or travel to the third page to view them.

  1. I really like UXM # 55.
Once again we have a very striking image, showing a character at the very center of the cover.
Even in this case he seems to be very powerful, because a blinding light is coming from his chest, and the energy coming from his body is so intense that it enlightens the other characters and the sky behind him.
As you know, I love when the leading characters are put in the background and the supporting one is in the foreground, so this is a brilliant stylistic choice that instantly caught my attention and won me over.
I also love the fact that this cover doesn’t tell us whether the green guy is friend or foe, so it compels you to open the book up in order to find it out.
Special mention for UXM # 60 and 61, because of the detailed background.
As for the Flash, I pick issue # 153, because I love the concept of time travel.

Yet another terrific analysis by wwayne. I look at that character and have to admit that I have absolutely no clue who he is whatsoever. Very interesting indeed.

And I would give special mention to #59, my personal runner-up. I love that image of Cyclops, his costume tattered, desperately trying to hold himself upright, unleashing an optic blast that might have no effect against the three approaching Sentinels.

Let’s take a second to analyze: he punched him so hard that he was flung into the future. How can anyone not love that?

Thanks as always for providing your selections!

  2. Wow, great covers for this edition of Retroactive! Flash #151 features Flash & Jay Garrick as well as The Shade, what a brilliant cover. Really like the cover of Uncanny X-Men #57 as well, with the Sentinels closing in on the X-Men. Brilliant, really enjoy this extra Retroactive feature since it was introduced. Cheers and have a very happy Christmas 😀

Glad to hear it! This week it seems that it is the season to be merry and for us to be on the same page. 🙂 Also, thanks for the words of encouragement and well wishes!
