In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week while also highlighting various Comic Book Cosplay. This will include any notable news about comic books from DC, Marvel, and the Independents. Let’s begin:
Valiant Brings The 1stsStarting in May, Valiant is starting a new initiative called “Valiant First” with their plan being to release the first issue of a new series every month for the rest of 2014. Valiant Executive Editor Warren Simmons explained: “The defining goal of VALIANT FIRST is to give readers clear and accessible jumping-on points into Valiant’s award-winning publishing line. Over the past two years, Valiant’s approach to the craft and business of comics has been widely imitated throughout the industry. We’re incredibly flattered by that fact, but we also see it as a challenge. Our response is to raise the bar even higher. We’ve been building momentum with a slew of awards and the best reviewed line of books on the market – but 2014 is where you’ll see us double our game without doubling the size of our publishing line.” Without further ado, here’s the current titles announced:
RAI #1 (May) Written by Matt Kindt; Art by Clayton Crain
“In the far future of 4001 A.D., Japan is a single endless city-state, governed by a benevolent artificial intelligence and policed by an army of just one – the mysterious Rai, spirit guardian of the rising sun. But, soon, a single bullet will shatter the peace it has taken 2,000 years to secure…”
ARMOR HUNTERS #1 (June) Written by Robert Venditti; Art by Doug Braithwaite
“A relentless and surgical strike team from the farthest reaches of space – sworn to exterminate the X-O Manowar armor and all like it – have found finally their last target. They will hunt. They will trap. They will kill. And they will rid the universe of the X-O Manowar’s incalculable destructive power…even if it means taking the Earth with it. In the tradition of the universe-changing HARBINGER WARS, Valiant’s biggest heroes launch into the summer’s blockbuster 18-issue crossover event right here in ARMOR HUNTERS #1 – and then take the fight to the world’s first full-scale cosmic threat with new arcs of UNITY and X-O MANOWAR beginning in June, and ARMOR HUNTERS: BLOODSHOT and ARMOR HUNTERS: HARBINGER beginning in July!
ARMOR HUNTERS: BLOODSHOT #1 (July) Written by Joe Harris; Art by Trevor Hairsine
“The most dangerous weapon in the Valiant Universe has come in from the cold. With Earth under siege by the Armor Hunters, Bloodshot is the only thing standing between the destruction of the extraterrestrial intelligence agency known as MERO and the liberation of one of the Armor Hunters’ own.”
ARMOR HUNTERS: HARBINGER #1 (July) Written by Joshua Dysart; Art by Robert Gill
Because you demanded it! Out of the ashes of Harbinger Wars, the volatile psiot strike force known as Generation Zero step into their very first adventure – and right into the crosshairs of the Armor Hunters!
THE DELINQUENTS #1 (August) Written by Fred Van Lente & James Asmus; Art by Kano
It’s the world’s worst team-up when Archer & Armstrong meet Quantum and Woody! We apologize in advance for what can only be described as a swashbuckling, conspiracy-smashing, partner-trading, goat-fueled race across the USA!
THE DEATH-DEFYING DR. MIRAGE #1 (September) Written by Jen Van Meter; Art by Roberto de la Torre
World-renowned parapsychologist Dr. Mirage and her husband Hwen were madly, deeply, stuff-of-legends in love – until the day a tragic accident stole Hwen away. Now, Dr, Mirage will have to use every ounce of her training and talents in the mystic arts to do the one thing Hwen taught her never to do – journey across the realms of Deadside and bring her love back to the land of the living.
I currently only get Quantum & Woody as none of the other Valiant characters really interest me that much. I worry that my favourite title of theirs is going to be ruined by adding Archer & Armstrong to the mix but I’ll at least try the first issue.
There was no notable news from DC this week.
(#1) The second trade paperback of Superior Foes of Spider-Man contains more (9 issues) than the standard six issues that most trades contain. This event unfortunately usually signifies that a series is coming to an end. Hopefully it means that it is just going to be relaunched as Amazing Foes of Spider-Man rather than this absolutely fantastic series riding off into the sunset forever…
(#2) May marks the start of a four issue mini-series staring Shang-Chi entitled Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu. The mini is coming to us from the team of Mike Benson and Tan Eng Huat and is described as follows: “Hero. Teacher. Agent. Avenger. Shang-Chi has been many things. But this time, Marvel Universe’s most impressive hand-to-hand combatant is only one – vengeful! A highly trained MI-6 agent has been murdered in cold blood. One with deep ties to Shang-Chi’s past. As he journey’s to England to pay his respects, he’ll learn not all is as it seems. And if he’s not careful, he’s going to be the next body to drop!”
(#3) Cyclops is getting his own solo title: “What would you do if you were suddenly thrust into the future? See your older self. Learn the path you’ve taken. The mistakes you’ve made. Now, imagine that the father you thought died long ago is alive and well – and is a space pirate! This May, experience the ongoing adventures of young Scott Summers in CYCLOPS #1 – the all-new series from Eisner Award winning writer Greg Rucka and artist Russel Dauterman! Spinning directly out of the blockbuster All-New X-Men crossover “The Trial of Jean Grey” comes the very first ongoing solo series for one of the time-travelling Original X-Men. After clashing with the Shi’ar on the edge of deep space, Scott Summers is about to encounter the last person he’d ever expect to meet – his father! Long thought dead, Corsair, leader of that intergalactic band of misfits the Starjammers, has returned! And he’s got a new recruit in the form of his son, young Cyclops himself! Scott Summers is leaving the X-Men behind to stay in space amd learn a few valuable lessons from dad: 1) How to shave, 2) How to talk to women, 3) How to steal a Badoon spaceship.” A Cyclops solo title doesn’t really grab me but with Rucka involved I’m willing to give it a shot.
(#1) After Judge Dredd wraps up its current arc, Issue #17 will bring us The Dark Judges: “The morgue full of 13 dead Judges were only the beginning… of the end! Dredd’s most vicious and unstoppable enemies—the Dark Judges—are clawing their way into Mega-City One, determined to transform it into a new city of the dead. That’s right: Judges Death! Mortis! Fire! Fear! (And some new friends!) But the only thing more horrifying than the Dark Judges’ onslaught are drastic measures the Justice Department is willing to take to repel them.”
(#2) Chew and Revival are crossing over. Coming out in May, the special issue will be split in half by the two creative teams. John Layman expands: “In my head I’ve got a checklist of all my favorite books I want Chew to crossover with, if for no other reason than it gives me an opportunity to visit a world that isn’t mine, that I’d nonetheless like to play in. Revival is at the top of the list, and I’m stoked I’ve got the opportunity to send Tony Chu to visit. It’s a fun opportunity to check out both books for less than a single issue of each.” Mike Norton added: “When John Layman proposed the idea, I told Tim Seeley, ‘No way. That will never work.’ After a while I thought about it and went back to Tim and said, ‘Yeah, no way, that will never work!’ But then, I thought even more on it. I think the way we’re doing it is reminiscent of when Indie books of the ’80s would cross companies and appear in each book even though you’d never expect those universes to collide. It’s just a matter of loosening up and having some fun.” I’m a huge fan of Chew, religiously picking up the trade paperbacks every time one hits the shelves so I’m intrigued to see how they mash the two different worlds together.
