On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 02/26/14

Radar

In this feature I’ll highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Aquaman #28
Aquaman #28

Creative Team

Jeff Parker and Paul Pelletier
Solicitation
“He’s saved a diver from a vicious shark attack–but he’ll soon regret it. His most powerful weapon has been stolen from his care–and he’s never even heard of the man who took it. But Aquaman’s greatest challenge yet may be Amnesty Bay’s ten year high school reunion!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
I’ll be the first to admit that since Geoff Johns left this series it has been suffering. So why is this issue listed as one of my Top 5 most anticipated titles then? Simple answer: Aquaman is going to his high school reunion. If that doesn’t produce some memorable moments then I don’t know what will.

Fantastic Four #1
Fantastic Four #1
Creative Team
James Robinson and Leonard Kirk
Solicitation

“‘THE FALL OF THE FANTASTIC FOUR’ PART 1. The world’s greatest comics magazine begins anew with Marvel’s First Family, the Fantastic Four! But as the brilliant MR. FANTASTIC, the compassionate INVISIBLE WOMAN, the ever lovin’ THING & the hot-headed HUMAN TORCH embark on a strange mission, they aren’t met with new beginnings, but an untimely end! As the family of cosmic explorers head towards their darkest hour, who could possibly be behind their downfall? And how is one of their oldest enemies, the sadistic dragon known as Fing-Fang-Foom involved? Prepare for the fantastic! ”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
NEW SERIES ALERT! It is time for yet another new #1 for the Fantastic Four franchise. The last incarnation left me absolutely adoring its spinoff title (FF) over the parent which made me even sadder when the news came that FF would not be getting an All-New Marvel NOW relaunch. Maybe this latest volume will recapture the magic that has been missing since Hickman left the title. The answer will become know pretty quickly indeed.

Five Weapons #7
Five Weapons #7
Creative Team
Jimmie Robinson
Solicitation
“‘BACK TO CLASS,’ Part Two The tables are turned on Enrique in a no-win contest at the school of Five Weapons. Tyler is now the smartest kid in school and he’s using Enrique as a pawn in his malicious plans, but Enrique learns an old secret that could tilt the rivalry in his favor.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Five Weapons made its triumphant return last month and came back with a bang. We got familiar characters in new situations while setting-up the new central mystery and villain of this next chapter. The last issue also ended with its trademark cliffhanger ending where we wonder just how Enrique would overcome the latest obstacle set before him despite the limitations that are placed on him. I love this series and can’t wait to tear open this next issue and discover along with everyone else how he will do just that.

Hawkeye #15
Hawkeye #15
Creative Team
Matt Fraction and David Aja
Solicitation
“The brothers Barton double down against the bad guys as the Clown lays siege to their building. Can Hawkguy keep everyone safe against a killer nobody’s even seen yet? What happens when you’re locked up with your loser big brother for like a week straight?  You go nuts, right? Clint goes a little nuts. Plus . . . two free staples!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
The wait for this issue has been excruciatingly long with Issue #16 actually coming out before this one. Despite the long wait, we know that after finally getting it into our hands that we’ll utter the famous line “the wait was well worth it!” And don’t forget that not only do we get one awesome issue from Fraction and Aja but we also receive…two free staples as well.

Wolverine and the X-Men #42

Creative Team
Jason Aaron, Pepe Larraz, and Nick Bradshaw
Solicitation
“SCHOOL’S OUT FOREVER! FINAL ISSUE! It’s the end of the year for the Jean Grey school – but where do our graduates go from here? And who will have survived the experience?! Jason Aaron, Pepe Larraz & Nick Bradshaw bring the story of the Jean Grey school to a close!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
For the majority of Jason Aaron’s run this series has been simply exceptional. It has been an emotional rollercoaster ranging from great dramatic character work to humorous lines aplenty. I’m torn as to why they are even relaunching this series with a new writer at the helm. To me this book, along with all the characters that Aaron has breathed into life, will forever be his. I sure wouldn’t want to be the one that follows him up.

  1. Seeing Aaron’s run on WatXM come to an end makes me happy. Maybe Latour won’t treat readers like idiots, by filling the book with two-dimensional characters and horribly lame villains (the Hellfire Brats should die and never be used ever again, and Aaron should be slapped in the back of the head for inflicting them on readers in the first place, because they are one of the absolute dumbest concepts I have ever seen). I’m also hoping Latour remembers that the school has more than 7 students, and that the New X-Men students actually exist. Aaron’s run on WatXM ranks with Chuck Austen’s run on UXM. Except Austen treated Husk with some respect, while Aaron did a complete character assassination on her. Worst X-title of the past 10 years.

As for what I’m looking forward to: Avengers Assemble, Mighty Avengers, My Little Pony, and Revolutionary War.
