Retroactive: Green Arrow 1991 & The Punisher 1990

In Retroactive I’ll take you on a visual comic cover tour of the past covering all the covers for a particular series. Each entry will cover an entire year and I’ll always have one comic from DC and one comic from Marvel. At the end of each edition of Retroactive I’ll select my overall favourite cover for that year for each series. Last time on Retroactive we covered Green Arrow 1990 and The Punisher 1989. If you need a refresher, just click HERE. Below you’ll find the two series that I’m currently covering. Click on that specific logo to be instantly taken directly to that series. The last section is reserved for my Top Picks from each year. Click the logo or travel to the third page to view them.

  1. I really like Green Arrow # 53.
A crook apparently survived to a gunfight, and he’s escaping from the scene of the crime with a bullet in his arm. He must find a doctor as soon as possible, or he will bleed to death.
Unfortunately for him Green Arrow won’t let him take himself off so easily. Oliver is waiting in ambush for him, and his arrow is pointed exactly on his wounded arm.
Unfortunately for our hero, Oliver is not the only one in search of this crook. In the background you can notice the shadows of 3 other gangsters, and each of them has a submachine gun that could easily kill both Green Arrow and the man he’s waiting for.
How could Green Arrow capture this crook without getting killed from the other gangsters? He obviously needs a big fat deus ex machina… and, as you know, a cover foreshadowing a deus ex machina has a big chance to get the gold medal in my personal ranking.
As for Frank, I pick Punisher # 43, because it’s the most heated and action packed cover of the year, in my opinion. The cover you chose comes pretty close in my personal ranking, because I agree with you that the colouring and the light effects are thought out and simply awesome.
I would have chosen issue # 31 for the first prize if I hadn’t known that it’s a blatant rehash of the cover for Green Arrow Vol. 2 # 18, which had been released 9 months earlier. Did the cover artist seriously think we couldn’t make the connection?

An excellent pick indeed. After doing some research on the issue though, this cover is actually a clever misdirect. Oliver is actually working to protect this man from some rather unsavory gentlemen. Once this knowledge has been gleamed, you could interpret the cover as being Oliver is letting the wounded man act as bait, ready to launch a barrage of arrows on the unsuspecting pursuers. A cover with not one but two layers to it. Brilliant! My runner-up would be #50. Even though its been done before on this series, I love that reflection in the water image.

And what about that tagline: “Germany has the Autobahn. Now, Mexico has the Slaughter-Bahn!” Perfect. My runner-up would be #35. “Car by Porsch. Suit by Blase. Face by Punisher!” Love that line.

“Did the cover artist seriously think we couldn’t make the connection?”
He was hoping Green Arrow fans and Punisher fans wouldn’t read both series. Better luck next time. 🙂

Thanks, as always, for providing your selections!

  2. Some brilliant cover to pick from here. I chose Green Arrow #48 with GA facing an Elephant, such a stunning image. Something so exciting about it, with the elephant towering over GA. I liked the Punisher #43 with the Punisher being chased in a car by loads of thugs on Motorbikes, wow, what an action packed cover! No idea what the story is, but would sure like to read this!

Terrific. I love the look on Oliver’s face as he realizes things are pretty hopeless. One man versus a stampede of three elephants? I don’t like his chances one bit…

You and wwayne are in total agreement with this one.

      Thanks for sharing your choices!
