On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 06/11/14

Radar

It is time once again to highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Amazing Spider-Man #1.2
Amazing Spider-Man #1.2

Creative Team

Dan Slott and Ramon K. Perez
Solicitation
“J. Jonah’s Jameson’s crusade against Spider-Man kicks into overdrive! He warned us! He told us that kids might try to emulate Spider-Man! And he was RIGHT! Meet CLASH, New York’s newest menace. He may be Spidey’s biggest fan, but he’s about to become one of his worst enemies. Wanted by the cops, turned away by the Fantastic Four, his grades are slipping, and he still hasn’t figured out this whole crime-fighting-thing. Pete’s not a hero… not yet… but he’ll get there. Somehow. ”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
For those of you who proclaim all these issues devoted to Spider-Man’s early days are unnecessary and pointless I say you are mistaken. Are you not a fan of great character work? Are you not a fan of terrific art harkening back to the old days? Are you not a fan of seeing a new and interesting villain emerge? And are you not a fan of shedding some light on past events that will have major ramifications on the present day? If you pass on these issues you are most definitely missing out and only have yourself to blame.

Detective Comics #32
Detective Comics #32

Creative Team
Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul
Solicitation

“The next great Batman murder-mystery continues to unfold in ‘Icarus’ part three, brought to you by the acclaimed creative team of THE FLASH! Batman is caught in the clutches of the crime boss known as ‘The Squid’ as he digs deeper into a whodunit for the ages!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
It has been a slow burn so far on this story but aren’t all great mysteries slow burns? Regardless on how you feel about the story, the art is mind-blowingly awesome but did you expect anything less from Manapul? There could be no dialogue whatsoever and I’d still enjoy any issue that he works on.

New Avengers #19
New Avengers #19

Creative Team

Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti
Solicitation
“It’s the battle you didn’t know you wanted to see-until now! As the New Avengers take on the combined power of the Great Society-and only a single parallel Earth can survive!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Issue #18 pulled the old bait-and-switch on us as they promised this titanic battle between our team of Avengers and the stand-ins for the DC Universe. At the conclusion of that issue I wasn’t too happy with old Mr. Hickman but it also served to get me even more excited for the eventual battle to start. Now the time has finally arrived but the main question will be if it can live up to the hype or if these last few issues were just a waste of time. I can’t wait to discover the answer for myself.

Secret Avengers #4
Secret Avengers #4

Creative Team

Ales Kot and Michael Walsh
Solicitation
“‘INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT’ The Fury reappears inside the Kowloon Walled City — which is deep inside the Chinese territory. Who you gonna call? No-one, but Nick Fury, Hawkeye and a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents come anyway. Problems? You bet. The Kowloon gangs want The Fury as well. On the Helicarrier, someone dies. The ground is not steady. Things escalate.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
This is arguably the best Avengers series on the stands today with the perfect blend of drama, action, humor, and quirkiness. Every issue uses every page to its maximum effect and it is a real shame that not as many people are checking out this awesome series. That’s right, it is awesome and I’m sure this fourth issue will be just as awesome if not even more awesome than the issues that preceded it.

She-Hulk #5
She-hulk #5

Creative Team

Charles Soule and Ronald Wimberly
Solicitation
“She-Hulk & Hellcat must uncover the secrets of the Blue File – a conspiracy that touches the entire Marvel Universe! This new mystery brings us She-Hulk’s most terrifying role ever: DEFENDANT! Charles Soule (THUNDERBOLTS) and Ron Wemberly (MIGHTY AVENGERS) continue the smash hit of All-New Marvel Now!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
The Blue File has been teased since the debut issue of this series and the time has come to start and unravel the strange and unknown circumstances that led to its creation. It promises a “conspiracy that touches the entire Marvel Universe” which is a pretty bold proclamation but if anyone can deliver on that promise it is Charles Soule.

  1. Picked up All New X-Men, Captain Marvel, She Hulk, Justice League United 2, Avengers Undercover, Hulk (I decided to stick with it until Mark Waid’s run ends soon, then drop it), Nightcrawler, Batgirl and Blood Queen 1. Why Blood Queen 1? Because it’s based on one of the most notorious serial killers of all time, Elizabeth Bathory.

    • How are you liking Avengers Undercover so far? For me it seems to have lost some of that magic from the Avengers Arena series though I’d still rather have an Avengers Academy book over either title. I haven’t read the latest issue though but maybe it will turn me around?

      • It’s alright, but I agree that it’s not quite as good as Avengers Arena yet. It seems to be taking its time with setting up the plot – maybe a bit too much.

I do kind of miss Avengers Academy. They recently announced that Avengers Undercover also has a planned ending, so for all we know it’ll be followed with another Academy style series. One can hope.

        • The solicitation for this series’ final issue states: “Be there as the character journeys that began in AVENGERS ACADEMY & AVENGERS ARENA end here!” Things don’t looks so good for a follow-up series…
