In Retroactive I’ll take you on a visual comic cover tour of the past covering all the covers for a particular series. Each entry will cover an entire year and I’ll always have one comic from DC and one comic from Marvel. At the end of each edition of Retroactive I’ll select my overall favourite cover for that year for each series. Last time on Retroactive we covered The Flash 1985 and Uncanny X-Men 1993. If you need a refresher, just click HERE. Below you’ll find the two series that I’m currently covering. Click on that specific logo to be instantly taken directly to that series. The last section is reserved for my Top Picks from each year. Click the logo or travel to the third page to view them.

I really like Flash # 2.
First of all, it shows one of the most typical situations of action packed comics: some characters falling down or being about to fall down from a broken window.
Secondly, the cover artist surely spent a lot of time drawing all those small pieces of glass and all those grey bricks, and I really appreciate it.
Thirdly, the composition is extraordinary. The characters are juxtaposed to each other in a brilliant way: the damsel in distress leaning to the right in order to make the villain almost entirely visible, the arm of the villain put between Flash’s arm and leg in order to hamper his run towards the woman, Flash’s left hand being just one centimetre too far from the woman’s hair… yes, this cover definitely deserves the gold medal.
As for the X – Men, I love both Jubilee and character – driven stories, so I completely agree with the X – cover you chose. Special mention for UXM # 310: my eyes shine each time I see Cable, especially when he wears those giant and gorgeous shoulder pads. I also love the fact that the villain’s face is not shown.
“I really like Flash # 2.”
I agree wholeheartedly that this cover was awesome and it wins my runner-up award hands down. I really can’t add anymore to your terrific summary of the reasons this cover deserves the love.

And I would direct special mention to #316’s double page spread. Seeing the X-Men and Sabretooth battle twisted copies of the X-Men we know and love is both shocking and downright gorgeous to look at.
Thanks, as always, for providing your choices! 🙂
Thank you as well for your compliments and for your reply! : )
I agree with you on Flash Vol 2 #5 a very intriguing cover, certainly makes you wonder what is going on here and dive into the issue to find out. I like you choice for Uncanny X-Men as well, but I went for Uncanny X-Men #308 in the end, as it features Jean and Scott running towards us, while to the side we see two almost ghostly images of their younger selves in their original costumes, a great look back at the past I like how we all enjoyed the cover featuring Jubilee as well, a great retroactive 😀

This would be my 3rd Place cover with #316 taking the runner-up award. It is an eye-catching image and this “Mixed blessings. A turning point in the lives of the X-Men!” that they tease on this Cyclops/Grey cover has my mind racing to figure out what it could be.
Thanks for sharing you selections. It is much appreciated. 🙂
Yes, that X-Men cover is a really good one, nice mix of past and present. I really like how it also features the original costumes. You’re welcome, always enjoy retroactive and sharing my cover selections, as well as seeing what covers you all choose as well. Have a great weekend 😀
And I hope your weekend is going great as well! 🙂
Cheers 😀
Flash Vol. 2 was the last good Flash series in my view! Great trip down memory lane, I bought every one of these off the spinner rack back in the day! Loves em!
Wally West will always be my Flash. I never had the pleasure of reading these earlier issues though I can only imagine their excellence. 🙂
Unfortunately, all my LCSs are seriously lacking in older Flash comics or trades…
