Retroactive: Green Arrow 2007 & The Punisher 2006

In Retroactive I’ll take you on a visual comic cover tour of the past covering all the covers for a particular series. Each entry will cover an entire year and I’ll always have one comic from DC and one comic from Marvel. At the end of each edition of Retroactive I’ll select my overall favourite cover for that year for each series. Last time on Retroactive we covered Green Arrow 2006 and The Punisher 2005. If you need a refresher, just click HERE. Below you’ll find the two series that I’m currently covering. Click on that specific logo to be instantly taken directly to that series. The last section is reserved for my Top Picks from each year. Click the logo or travel to the third page to view them.

  1. I really like Green Arrow # 68.
First of all, it has a very unusual perspective, and the unique angle utilized gives the cover an epic vibe I absolutely adore.
Secondly, those flames behind Oliver make us understand that a fire is consuming Star City, and this is a situation our hero can’t handle: he’s just an archer without any superpower, so how could he prevent the flames from burning his city? He needs a big fat deus ex machina to save the day… and, as you know, a cover foreshadowing a deus ex machina has a big chance to get the gold medal in my personal ranking.
Thirdly, I love the enticing tagline “Welcome back to the jungle.” This cover has an urban setting, so what could the tagline mean? Maybe it wants to convey the message that, after the fire, Star City lapsed into anarchy, and became an urban jungle.
I also love the unusual colour used for the sky, the way light and shadows are combined on the chimney and on Oliver’s body, the fact that he’s about to shoot a sword instead of shooting an arrow… as you can see, I listed SIX reasons why this cover deserves the gold medal, so I give it the first prize without the shadow of a doubt.
As for Frank, you know that I love fourth wall breaking, so the cover you chose got very close to the gold medal. At the end I decided to pick issue # 28: instead of the same old generic image that could be put on any Punisher cover, here we get an image that has a strong connection with the content of the issue. It shows our hero studying an anatomy book in order to refine his torture methods, and this is exactly what Frank did after finding out that the slavers he wants to fight deserved a more severe punishment than a simple bullet in the head.
P.S.: While I’m writing my analysis, I’m listening to this wonderful song:

    • “I really like Green Arrow # 68.”
This was originally going to be my third place cover with #73 getting the silver medal but after reading your superb write-up you completely won me over and I have made the switch in regards to these two cover’s positions. Fantastic!

I love covers that gain even more meaning and get even more awesome after you read the issue. For me, my runner-up would have to go to #38 though. Frank tied to chair, getting conked on the head and falling over. It is not your usual Punisher cover and for that reason alone it really stands out for me.

Thanks, as always, for providing your choices, the expert analysis, and sharing the song. 🙂

  2. Well, I really liked Green Arrow Vol 3 #69 that featured Green Arrow and Batman on the cover. Its always great to see these two characters team, and it makes for a very exciting cover. Punisher Vol 6 #31 caught my eye with the sharks in the background behind the Punisher. Have no idea what the story in this issue is, but it certainly looks exciting!

Then you are really going to love the next edition of Retroactive for LOTDK!

The colouring on the cover is amazing as well.

Thanks for providing your selections! It is always quite appreciated. 🙂
