Between The Continuity – Guardians of the Galaxy Review

This past weekend saw the release of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, a film that I had been looking forward to for quite some time. I had the pleasure of seeing it on Monday and I have one word that sums it up perfectly…EPIC! From the emotionally moving opening all the way to the last scene, this movie was too awesome for words. It was the right mixture of humor, action, terrific dialogue, and heartfelt moments.

Each and every one of the Guardians was great with Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of Rocket Raccoon and Chris Pratt as Star-Lord being the real standouts. Not to be left out, Vin Diesel made three little words (I am Groot) his own and the character was quite nuanced, Batista’s Drax played the straight man and was all the better for it, and Zoe Saldana’s Gamora was simply kickass. On the villain side of things, Lee Pace’s Ronan was an imposing presence with no redeeming qualities and Karen Gillan’s Nebula had a great look, great scenes, a sinister edge, and if you didn’t tell me it was her I wouldn’t have believed you. Speaking of which, Bradley’s voice for Rocket was amazing and once again shrouded the actor’s identity immersing us in the character while Pratt was the lovable hero who was brave, funny, charming and a man that wowed us. Fun easter eggs, Brolin as Thanos who looked perfect after seeing him in motion, Yondu’s attitude, teases for the future, and Del Toro who excelled with his second portrayal of the Collector were even more highlights. While the visuals were breathtaking some of my favourite moments happened when just our five heroes were talking with one another showcasing the strong characterization and dialogue that was found throughout. The interplay between each one was highly entertaining and over the course of the two-hour runtime we grew even fonder of each one. Last but not least, I’d be remiss not to talk about the music which consisted of songs from the 70s and the 80s, songs which were seamlessly incorporated into the movie and accentuated each scene that they were found in.

I’ve heard a lot of people say that this movie is Marvel’s answer to Star Wars and I frankly have to agree with them. It may have been their biggest risk but that risk produced fantastic and successful results. If you are a fan of awesome movies then you should…no, you must take a trip down to the theatre and check this film out!
