Triumphant Farewells, A World At War, and The Dead Call Out: Comic Book Covers of the Week 08/13/14

 Third Place batgirl34Batgirl #34
Alex Garner
certainly delivered one dramatic cover this week to take the third place spot. Gail Simone’s final issue ends on a high note with this amazing and breathtaking cover. Batgirl is perched on a giant billboard, worse for wear as is apparent by her torn cape and costume, the bloody bandage wrapped around her arm, and the blood trickling down from her mouth. She has obviously been through one hell of a battle but the giant word undefeated could speak to the fact that she herself is undefeated, that she has not lost to this latest threat to Gotham and kept her perfect record intact. The blistering light in the background almost blinds us, making us want to hold up our hands and shield our eyes. It is so realistic and perfectly represents the dawning of a new day in Batgirl’s life, the conclusion of one chapter leading to the advent of an all-new one with a brand-new creative team waiting in the wings. Adding the swarm of bats alongside her is another great touch and their inclusion could symbolize the allies in her life that are willing to fight alongside her. It is an amazing cover that puts a perfect capper to Simone’s run and a cover that is truly worthy of being featured on her last issue. I bid thee farewell!

  1. My podium is:

Bronze medal: Harley Quinn # 9
    Silver medal: Batgirl # 34
Gold medal: Batman Eternal # 19

I’m really sorry that I didn’t give a better prize to Harley Quinn # 9. The question this cover raises (why is she winking at us while a cop is handcuffing her?) is so interesting that this cover probably would have won the gold medal in any other week. Unfortunately the 2 Bat – covers I mentioned are so beautiful from an aesthetic point of view that I really couldn’t exclude them from the highest spots of the podium.

I’m in total agreement with you. The line-up of covers was stellar this week. As for why she is winking, if you take a closer look at her hands it appears that she has the key to the cuffs in them. She’s breaking the fourth wall and letting us in on her plan which I really love.

      Thanks for sharing you Rankings!
