Triumphant Farewells, A World At War, and The Dead Call Out: Comic Book Covers of the Week 08/13/14

is the runner-up this week with this cover featuring John Constantine himself. Every once in a while I see a cover that is so fantastic, so eye-catching, that despite the fact that I do not subscribe to the series I am compelled to pick up an issue due to the image alone. This is one of those instances. It is a cover that utilizes only three colours (black, white, and red) to great effect. Standing front and centre is our favourite anti-hero who is stylistically drawn, smoking a cigarette in his mouth and brandishing a bayonette in his hands. Constantine finds himself in a rather ominous proverbial river of blood with even more blood oozing down the trench walls. Behind him is a smoky and war-torn skyline, the haze forming a rather horrifying and deathly skull. Situated in each one of the skull’s eye sockets and on top of the barbwire fence posts at the top of the trenches are a World War I German helmet and a World War I American helmet. The inclusion of all these elements from the past really gets us thinking due to Constantine being a man of the present day. Did he travel through time? How? For what purpose? Will he change history? Can he get back? It compels you to open the book up for answers and like I always say…that is what truly makes a great cover.

  1. My podium is:

Bronze medal: Harley Quinn # 9
    Silver medal: Batgirl # 34
Gold medal: Batman Eternal # 19

I’m really sorry that I didn’t give a better prize to Harley Quinn # 9. The question this cover raises (why is she winking at us while a cop is handcuffing her?) is so interesting that this cover probably would have won the gold medal in any other week. Unfortunately the 2 Bat – covers I mentioned are so beautiful from an aesthetic point of view that I really couldn’t exclude them from the highest spots of the podium.

I’m in total agreement with you. The line-up of covers was stellar this week. As for why she is winking, if you take a closer look at her hands it appears that she has the key to the cuffs in them. She’s breaking the fourth wall and letting us in on her plan which I really love.

      Thanks for sharing you Rankings!
