It is time for the best covers from the week that was. A quick reminder: only comics that I personally have purchased qualify for this piece. If a title contains more than one cover, only the one I own is taken into consideration. Now without further ado:

Rocket Raccoon # 3 is a delightful parody of the X – Force covers starring Cable that Rob Liefeld used to draw in the 90s (this is my favorite one: http://marvel.wikia.com/X-Force_Vol_1_9), so it gets the gold medal.
Silver medal for UXM # 25: the characters are depicted in such a realistic way that this cover seems to be made with frames from a b/w movie, and this speaks volumes about how talented the cover artist is. I also love the unusual tone of red the colourist used.
Bronze medal for The Punisher # 10: not only because the skull has been drawn in a very creative way, but also because I love the politically incorrect artistic choice of showing some blood on the cover.
She – Hulk # 8 got very close to the bronze medal. The main reason why I considered this cover for the 3rd prize is Matt’s presence; I also appreciated the watercolour – like colouring. Maybe this cover actually is a watercolour, but I’m not sure.
Wow! We were not even close this week but that is part of the fun. Skottie’s Rocket covers have all been awesome so far, UXM #25 features Chris Bachalo broadening his abilities to craft something unlike anything he has ever produced, and the Punisher cover earned House of Flying Scapels’ top honors: http://houseofflyingscalpels.com/2014/09/07/cover-of-the-week-39-the-punisher-10-by-mitch-gerads/.
As for She-Hulk’s artist, I found this bit of info on him on the net: “Wada’s use of watercolour paints and washed out markers gives his colouring a tangibility on the page and really makes his art stand out.”
Thanks for sharing you personal Rankings. It is always appreciated.
Thank you as well for taking the time to look for some informations that could dispell my doubts about the technique used for She Hulk # 8. : )
You are most welcome.
By the way, I just finished to read Punisher # 10, and I can’t believe how good it was. Issues # 8 and # 9 were a bit under Edmonson’s standard, but issue # 10 was amazing. And that comes from a reader who does not like the “leading character in jail” cliché.
I just read it myself a few days ago and it was fantastic and a big step up from the aforementioned recent issues. Hopefully this title keeps it up.
Great to see the Cover of the Week back!
Thanks! 🙂
Really, any of those covers, including the runner-ups, could be considered the cover of the week. Hawkeye vs. Deadpool is hilarious, She Hulk is smart and simplistic, Uncanny X-Men is kind of genius and Rocket Raccoon perfectly fits his character.
It is these type of weeks that makes my job difficult but awesome at the same time. 🙂
