Retroactive: The Flash 2000 & Uncanny X-Men 2007

In Retroactive I’ll take you on a visual comic cover tour of the past covering all the covers for a particular series. Each entry will cover an entire year and I’ll always have one comic from DC and one comic from Marvel. At the end of each edition of Retroactive I’ll select my overall favourite cover for that year for each series. Last time on Retroactive we covered The Flash 1999 and Uncanny X-Men 2006. If you need a refresher, just click HERE. Below you’ll find the two series that I’m currently covering. Click on that specific logo to be instantly taken directly to that series. The last section is reserved for my Top Picks from each year. Click the logo or travel to the fourth page to view them.

  1. 2000 was a very good year for the Flash covers.
The gold medal goes to Flash # 159, because I love the ironic dialogue between the two. “It’s time for me to return! If you love me, you’ll come with me!” “That’s a proposal?” Simply awesome!
Silver medal for Flash # 161. The leading character makes something a lot of men can only dream, that is to say a PDA with a gorgeous woman in front of his friends. Not to mention the very enticing tagline: “Lightning – fast mystery and adventure!”
Bronze medal for Flash # 160, because even in this case we get a gorgeous romantic image. Also, the bullet holes all over that picture create an ominous atmosphere that makes the cover even more eye – catching.
As for the X – Men, I pick UXM # 488, because it shows one of my favourite situations in superhero comics: a character walking in the sewer system with a torch in his hand and his legs immersed in murky water. You’d expect that in a Bat – story, but it’s not that frequent in an X – issue.
Special mention for UXM # 484, because it’s an extremely powerful image and it conveys a lot of energy.

Yes indeed! Not only was it a great year for Flash covers but it was a momentous one as well as Geoff Johns began his terrific run on the title.

“Silver medal for Flash # 161.”
This cover came oh so close to capturing first place for me. I love the retro art style and the tagline “Lightning-fast mystery and adventure!” My bronze medalist is Flash #157. Wally kneeling before the tombstone of Linda Park, lightning flashing in the background, shadows used perfectly? Yes, this ominous cover is awesome and that tease of having the “Died Again” bit on the tombstone just makes my mind go into overdrive with questions.

      “As for the X – Men, I pick UXM # 488”
And this is my personal runner-up with #489 coming in third.

Thanks, as always, for providing your selections and offering your commentary!

  2. What nice cover for Flash vol 2 #161 featuring Jay and the other members of the JSA, really like this cover as it captures the style of this classic era perfectly. Uncanny X-Men #487 featuring Storm basking in the power of the storm she’s unleashed is a magnificent cover, it really showcases the raw power at her command, brilliant 😀
