Welcome one and all to Kickstart My Heart. This feature looks to shine a spotlight on a Comic Book Kickstarter campaign that deserves your money and your support. This edition will look at the property Under The Flesh by Gilbert Deltres and J.L. Giles.
So what is Under The Flesh about? Well the official press release summarizes it perfectly:
“Under the Flesh (UTF) is a dark horror story that could be described as a grindhouse mashup of Captain America, Y: The Last Man, and The Walking Dead.
Set in an post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a pathogen that only infect males turning them into savage cannibals, UTF strays away from the traditional viral story by accentuating a premeditated reason behind the plague, as opposed to leaving the origin of the outbreak as a common question mark. The protagonist, Ruben Lobos, is a genetically enhanced soldier that must face the challenges of a new devastated world, while being clueless about the true potential of his abilities. UTF features a diverse cast, comprised mostly of female survivors, and a renegade biker, named Jewel, that is yet not aware of the vital role she´ll play in the human race´s struggle for survival…and perhaps salvation.”
Much like last time, the artist of the comic, J.L. Giles, was kind enough to send me the entire second issue and I thought I’d share my thoughts. Previously, J.L. Giles had impressed me immensely with his artistic abilities which were the real standout of the first issue. So how was the follow-up:
So yeah, I think that pretty much speaks for itself. What I said last time still stands: “The talent of Giles will most assuredly take this series to new heights and he is definitely on my radar. If he isn’t currently, he will one day be on one of the Big 2’s radars as well if he keeps up the stellar work.”
Terrific art was never in question, how the second issue would follow-up in terms of story was. While the first issue focussed on establishing the entire cast, this one shines the spotlight more so on the main character of Ruben. We got a lot more action and Ruben got to shine as the Captain America-esque super solider that we were promised he was. Without going into spoilers, Ruben’s abilities set him apart from anything seen in the Walking Dead and looks to be the perfect example of a superhero/zombie mash-up done right. New villains are teased and the continual shifting to the most interesting character of the title, Jewel (pictured above), makes for another solid and somewhat poignant read. I want to find out more about this world, Ruben, and what direction the character of Jewel will eventually go in. Unfortunately for me, that will only happen if the second Kickstarter campaign is fully funded.
