On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 12/24/14

Radar Each week, countless titles see release from all the various comic companies out there. With that said, it is time once again to highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Avengers and X-Men: Axis #9
Avengers and X-Men Axis #9 (of 9)
Creative Team
Rick Remender, Terry Dodson, Jim Cheung, and Leinil Yu
Solicitation
“ACT III: NEW WORLD DISORDER. Who will live? Who will die? Who will remain inverted? A shocking climax that promises to crack the Marvel Universe to its very core! An old foe must claim the mantle of his greatest enemy to save the lives of all he cares for! An X-Man’s horrifying fate! An Avenger’s appalling choice! If you read only one comic this century–This is it!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
So yes, I think we can all admit that Marvel went a little overboard on the hype machine with this solicitation but don’t let that take away from the conclusion that is upon us. I’ve for the most part enjoyed this mini-series and am generally excited to see if it can deliver a satisfying ending or a god awful one like Original Sin. ________________________________________________________

Gotham By Midnight #2
Gotham By Midnight #2
Creative Team

Ray Fawkes and Ben Templesmith
Solicitation

“Internal Affairs Agent Rook is learning the Midnight Shift really does have the hard cases – and Jim Corrigan may not be able to bail him out. At least, not without some divine intervention! But can Corrigan risk letting loose the wrath of God, especially against a departed sister? ”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
I immensely enjoyed the debut issue of this series and the time has come for its follow-up. Can it match the magic of the first one? Will it perhaps improve on it? This issue will help establish if this series is a flash in the pan or something truly special indeed. I can’t wait to find out!

Grayson Annual #1
Grayson Annual #1
Creative Team

Tim Seeley and Stephen Mooney
Solicitation
“At last – it’s the secret origin of Helena Bertinelli!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
I’ll be the first to admit that I was apprehensive about this series when it first started but it has slowly won me over. A big part of that can be chalked up to the growing relationship between Dick and Helena. But what do we really know about her? This Annual looks to shed some light on this mysterious character and I couldn’t be more happy about that fact.

Green Lantern Annual #3
Green Lantern Annual #3
Creative Team

Robert Venditti and Billy Tan
Solicitation
“‘Godhead,’ act 3, part 6: The massive finale is here! On one side stand the New Gods, on the verge of conquering our universe in order to save it! On the other stand the combined might of the various Lantern Corps – or what’s left of them. And in the wings wait the unlikeliest of allies: Hal Jordan and Black Hand. Changes are coming to the heroes of interstellar space, and it all starts here, in the climactic final battle of mortals vs. gods!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Oh Godhead, you’ve exceeded my expectations on so many levels. A big improvement over the previous crossover event (Lights Out), this latest one looks to go out with a bang. They made me care about the New Gods and they improved the general quality of all the series involved. I call that a win-win. Too bad it has to end so soon…

Why I’m Looking Forward To It

  1. Unfortunately I work Christmas Eve, and while I don’t work until the afternoon, I won’t have time to review anything. I figure it’s a good excuse to take a week off of blogging though, and to just enjoy reading comics for the week.

Anyway, It’s looking like a Marvel only week for me. I missed all but one issue for the first act of Godhead (I didn’t even know it was happening until I picked up the first Red Lanterns issue), so I’ll probably read it when it comes out in trade. While I’ve read a little bit with Damien Wayne, I don’t know him well enough as a character to be excited for his return (I’ve only really seen him in Batman Incorporated, and a few tie-ins he had with Scott Snyder’s Batman series). It seems all the smaller publisher books I normally pick up are delayed until next month, rather than competing with Christmas and New Years.

I’m picking up All New X-Factor 18, All New X-Men Annual, Cyclops 8, Logan Legacy 7, Magneto 13, She Hulk 11 and Uncanny X-Men 29, with ANXM Annual and She Hulk as my most anticipated titles.

    • Everyone needs some time to unwind. I’m lucky that my place closes the 24th-26th. I’m also tacking on some holidays as well so I’m ready for some rest and some time to catch-up on my reading.

Thanks for sharing your pull-list and thoughts. The more stories you read with Damian in them the more he grows on you. Everyone was pretty hesitant to embrace him at first but he became so popular that those same people didn’t want to ever see him go. It will be interesting to see how he has changed post-resurrection.

  2. Just stumbled on here, so hopefully this comment isn’t intruding, but I have to agree with you 100% on the Gotham at Midnight choice. I picked up the 1st episode just by chance, and I fell in LOVE with it! Have to say that Robin Rises Alph #1 wasn’t on my Pull List, but now you’ve made me all excited. I may just have to add that to the list. Thanks for that!

  3. After a 2 weeks long hiatus, yesterday I read some new comic books:

    Moon Knight # 9
    Superman/Wonder Woman # 13
    AXIS Carnage # 2
    Witchblade # 179
    The Punisher # 12
    X # 19
    The Fade – Out # 3

I’ll share with you some quick thoughts about them.

Moon Knight # 9: By far the worst issue of this recently born series. What makes Moon Knight so wonderful is its urban setting: in an African one the leading character is like a fish out of water.
Superman/Wonder Woman # 13: The main reason why I thoroughly appreciated Soule’s run was the fact that he used to fill each issue with lots of slice – of – life scenes. Luckily Tomasi did the same thing in his first issue: that makes me think that, exactly like me, he understood which is the greatest strenght of Superman/Wonder Woman.
AXIS Carnage # 2: I don’t like the narrative choice of making Carnage redeem himself. Despite that, I deeply enjoyed this issue: it was full of action packed scenes, but it also had a solid story behind them.
Witchblade # 179: Perfect, as usual.
The Punisher # 12: Perfect, as usual.
X # 19: Not as good as it used to be, but it’s still a very nice read.
The Fade – Out # 3: The plot is not easy to follow, but the atmosphere is so great that I deeply enjoy this series anyway.

Also, I looked at the various solicitations for March 2015, and I found them quite unappealing. Next month the only comics I’m going to order from the Diamond Preview are Spider – Gwen # 2 and Stray Bullets: Sunshine & Roses # 3.

    • Moon Knight is getting another new writer soon. It is too bad that the original team left so soon. 6 issues was not enough.

As for Tomasi, his depiction of the Bruce/Damian relationship in Batman and Robin was nothing short of brilliant and he sure knows how to handle personal moments so I think Superman/Wonder Woman is in good hands.

Axis: Carnage is a victim of the crossover effect: a lot of the good guys are bad, and bad guys good due to a spell gone awry that inverted their moral compasses.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. What would you say is top read so far?

      • I’m 100 % sure that Batwing # 25 – 27 will be the best new read of the month, with Ultimate Spider – Man Annual # 1 grabbing the overall gold medal.
As for the comics I read last week, Witchblade # 179 was the best one. I started reading this series regularly from issue # 155 (which was a great jumping – on point), and all the 25 issues I read were 4 or 5 stars deserving.
Thank you for your replies! : )
