My Overall PickDD53

Daredevil #53. The immense figure of Daredevil holds the proverbial scales of justice in his hand, acting like the comic book equivalent of Lady Justice including their shared lack of sight. Like Lady Justice as well, Daredevil measures the strengths of a case’s support and opposition with this time the opposition being represented by the criminals and the support represented by Daredevil who is wearing his original yellow and red attire as he dodges a gunshot fired his way. The scale is tipping in the favor of the bad guys which could represent the fact that Daredevil is going to face an uphill struggle in his pursuit for justice. The caption “…In the beginning” combined with his retro attire informs us that at least part of this story will feature a flashback to an earlier case in Matthew Murdock’s heroic career which just intrigues me even further. Beautiful imagery, dynamic action, and a nice tease causes this cover to rise above the rest and claim the crown.

  1. 60s: Daredevil # 51 (April 1969)
    70s: tie between Daredevil # 99 (May 1973) and Daredevil # 124 (August 1975)
    80s: Daredevil # 227 (February 1986)
    90s: Daredevil Vol. 2 # 9 (December 1999)
    00s: Daredevil Vol. 2 # 52 (November 2003)
    10s: tie between Daredevil Vol. 3 # 26 (July 2013) and Daredevil Vol. 4 # 3 (July 2014)

    The 90s were the decade that made my choice most difficult, because there were three other covers that could have won the overall gold medal:

    – the cover you chose;
    – Daredevil # 335 (December 1994);
    – Daredevil # 351 (April 1996).

    At the end I decided to pick Daredevil Vol. 2 # 9, because it’s the first Daredevil issue I’ve ever read. Sentimentality wins out! 🙂

    • I know how difficult that must have been for you to narrow down all these fantastic covers to just eight and I thank you for that.

      Just for fun, taking your Top 8 picks, here would be my Rankings:

      1. Daredevil Vol. 3 # 26
      2. Daredevil Vol. 2 # 9
      3. Daredevil Vol. 4 # 3
      4. Daredevil # 227
      5. Daredevil Vol. 2 # 52
      6. Daredevil # 51
      7. Daredevil # 124
      8. Daredevil # 99
