In #Trending I’ll highlight and offer my opinions on any comic-related news that occurred during the week. This will included news about comic books, comic-related movies, TV shows, video games, etc. including sharing any hot trailers that were released. Let’s begin:
In mid-2014, Marvel released an onslaught of teasers for a bunch of huge upcoming events, one of which was the Secret Wars. This week, the comic-verse blew up with the news that the Marvel universe was ending. It sounds a lot worse than it is; in fact, it’s pretty cool. During the Secret Wars, the main Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe will be mashing together to form ‘Battleworld’.Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso has described the event as “two pizzas: they’re going to combine toppings, some toppings are going to drop off. And that is the Marvel Universe moving forward. It’s more than the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe, it’s all the universes you can imagine.”
Now I’m not a huge Marvel reader, but it’s pretty obvious that this event will be a massive turning point for Marvel. Plus using pizza as a metaphor gives them extra brownie points. Seems to me like it will be a good time to get onto some Marvel reading when Secret Wars #0 is released on Free Comic Book Day 2015. Alongside that will be the All-New, All-Different Avengers.
Director Bryan Singer has revealed the actors/actresses to play the roles of Cyclops, Storm and Jean Gray in his upcoming film, X-Men: Apocalypse. Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp and Sophie Turner will respectively be portraying three of the franchise’s most famous mutants.
Apart from Turner’s role in Game of Thrones, I’m not too familiar with the trio. What I do know is that they have some pretty big shoes to fill, following James Marsden, Halle Berry and Famke Janssen who are basically iconic to their roles just as Hugh Jackman is to Wolverine, playing the characters for over a decade.
The Hollywood Reporter has been informed that Melissa Benoist will bring to life Kara Zor-El in the upcoming TV series Supergirl. The show will be focusing around her life “after repressing said skills for more than a decade, Kara is forced to bust out her super moves in public during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins embracing her abilities in the name of helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.”
I’m pretty interested in this show, mainly to see how expanded their universe will be. Will Superman be mentioned? Unfortunately they have announced no crossovers with the existing DC TV universe, but fingers crossed they change their minds.
Last week, Tom Hardy left the Suicide Squad movie, after disagreements about the script. Director David Ayer had his eyes on Jake Gyllenhaal to replace him, however he has turned down the offer due to lack of interest. It has been rumoured that Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal have now been thrown into the mix to fill the spot for Rick Flag.
On the side, CinemaBlend has claimed that Gary Sinise has joined the film in a mystery role, while Joe Manganiello is in talks to be Deathstroke.
Not having read much of the older Suicide Squad comics, I know next to nothing about Rick Flag. To me, it seems like the movie could still work without him, especially if script changes made Tom Hardy leave (but perhaps he was being a bit of a diva). I’m pretty psyched for Deathstroke on the big screen. Manu Bennett was fantastic in Arrow (which unfortunately means he probably can’t play Slade in a film), but I’m happy with Manganiello; he really looks the part.
1) Mantis in Age of Ultron: A ‘very reliable Marvel source’ has revealed to that Mantis will be appearing in the upcoming Avengers: Age Of Ultron. It would make sense considering the character has ties to Thanos who Marvel have been teasing since the first Avengers movie as well as having relations with Vision, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and a personal vendetta against Klaw (who Andy Serkis is rumoured to play)
2) Aquaman rumours making a splash: Latino Review has reported that Karl Urban will potentially appear in the upcoming Aquaman film, for an ‘unspecified supporting role’, possibly the villain. Whilst Jeff Nichols and Noam Murro are in the running to direct.
3) ’12 Years’ actor in Doctor Strange: Oscar nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor is reportedly being pursed by Marvel for a role in Doctor Strange. The specifics of who he would play is unclear with no comment from Marvel Studios.
4) Venom gets a makeover: Marvel has debuted the concept art for Venom in the upcoming ‘Planet of the Symbiotes’ story arc. The new look has been done by artist Valerio Schiti, giving him quite the heavily armoured look, but still trying to make him “look more like he was in his first appearance.”
