On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 03/04/15

Radar Each week, countless titles see release from all the various comic companies out there. Some will be good, some will be bad, and some will be downright excellent. Of course, we don’t know which will be which but what we do know is which are our most anticipated. With that said, it is time once again to highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

All-New Hawkeye #1
All New Hawkeye #1
Creative Team
Jeff Lemire and Ramon K. Perez
Solicitation
“Hawkeye returns in an all-new series featuring superstar writer Jeff Lemire in his Marvel debut and Eisner Award-winning artist Ramon Perez, as they bring you a fresh new look into the life of everyone’s favorite Avenger. With Kate Bishop, his trusted ward and protégé back at his side (not titles she would use), Team Hawkeye is thrown into an all new adventure spanning two generations of avenging archers. Past and present lives collide as Kate and Clint face a threat that will challenge everything they know about what it means to be Hawkeye. But no one puts Hawkeye in a corner.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
So the newest volume of Hawkeye comes to us before the final issue of the previous volume. Despite this strange decision, it doesn’t mitigate my excitement to see Jeff Lemire tackle yet another archer especially after his awesome run on Green Arrow. Having both Kate and Clint back is very encouraging indeed as I love the relationship between the two characters. Whether this new volume can match or even surpass what Fraction and Aja accomplished is a moot point as this is a new series and should be judged on its own merits by everyone picking it up. I for one am really excited to get this latest chapter going!

Green Lantern #40
Green Lantern #40
Creative Team

Robert Venditti and Billy Tan
Solicitation

“It’s the ultimate betrayal! But what could make Hal Jordan turn on the Templar Guardians and the Corps? Setting the stage for a status quo change that will impact all the Green Lantern titles!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Wait a moment! Hal turning on the Corps? What in the world would cause such a reaction? Is he possessed by Parallax yet again? Is he under mind control? My anticipation levels are soaring as I eagerly await the answer.

Harley Quinn #15
Harley Quinn #15
Creative Team

Amanda Conner and Chad Hardin
Solicitation
“Harley was certain she could have it all: She could be the world’s best landlord, protect Coney Island from the scum of the Earth, woo Mason Macabre, work her day job as a psychiatrist, volunteer at the puppy shelter…but that’s a whole lot of spinning plates, and eventually they’re bound to start breaking! What happens when a psychopath cracks up? Is it possible for Harley to go even more insane?!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Things have been going relatively well for Harley over the course of the last 14 issues as we have really expanded her supporting cast and watched her grow apart from the craziness of Gotham. Seeing it all crash down is going to be similar to a car wreck: you just can’t help but look. How Harley deals with this latest setback will really tell us how far she has come.

Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #10
Iron Fist Living Weapon #10
Creative Team

Kaare Andrews
Solicitation
“THE DAWN OF NEW K’UN LUN?! The One’s plans come to horrible fruition. Danny Rand may be back in fighting shape, but is this a fight he could EVER win? The Punch Heard ‘Round The World!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
As this series races to its conclusion we know we are guaranteed three things with this issue. First there is the awesome art from Kaare. Secondly there is adrenaline-inducing action. Lastly there is going to be at least one dramatic and highly memorable moment. The only letdown? There are only three issues left of this series.

Rocket Raccoon #9
Rocket Raccoon #9
Creative Team

Skottie Young and Filipe Andrade
Solicitation
“MONSTER MASH! In the not-so-distant future, what happens when you water Groot a little too much? GROOTZILLA has arrived, and he ain’t happy! He’s faster than a speeding Rocket, more powerful than Drax the Destroyer, and able to eat tall buildings in a single gulp!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
One word: Grootzilla. ‘Nuff Said.

Reid Vanier’s Top Pick
Swamp Thing #40
Swamp Thing #40
Creative Team
Charles Soule and Jesus Saiz.
Solicitation
“Final Issue.”
Why He Is Looking Forward To It
That’s it. That’s the solicitation. Well, there is a single line about the sideways format of the cover, but otherwise, that’s it. Really, though: this is it. Swamp Thing, along with 13 other titles, ends this month. And while some of the series cancellations are due to low sales or poor critical reception, that is certainly not the case here. Most likely, it has to do with writer Charles Soule becoming a Marvel-exclusive writer (his other series, Red Lanterns, is also ending), but regardless of the reason, I go into this final issue with a heavy heart. Swamp Thing has been one of the most consistently engaging titles of the entire New 52 line. If you haven’t already noticed, Swamp Thing has been a Pick of the Week at least three times in the short history of this feature. Simply put, this title has run the gamut from action to horror; it has challenged expectations and been bold with its choices; and it has expanded and explored the vast mythos of the Green and other kingdoms but it never lost sight of the deep humanity that holds it all together. Soule’s run has been a particularly strong capstone for the series, bringing all of Alec Holland’s past to bear on him in the ultimate conflict. Anton Arcane has infiltrated and poisoned the Green, the Machine Queen (formerly Lady Weeds) seeks the ultimate humiliation and revenge against the Swamp Thing, and the titular hero’s choice to destroy the Parliament of Trees has come back around in the most unexpected way. I may not want this series to end, but this is exactly the story I want to end on, with exactly the creative team I trust to do it justice.

  1. Mine –

Avengers 42, Avengers World 18, Hulk 12, Batman Eternal, Futures End, Worlds End, Grayson 8, Wolf Moon 4, Angela 4, Iron Fist 10, Guardians Team-Up 1, Spider-Woman 5 and a few trades.

    • I’m probably going to give the first issue of Guardians Team-Up a shot. I’m also curious to read Spider-Woman #5 for two reasons: her new costume and the terrific art preview. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Weirdly small week for me also. I’m most looking forward to Rocket Raccoon 9, and I’m also picking up Wolverines 9, X-Men 25 and Angela: Asgard’s Assassin. With so few titles, I’ll likely pick up All New Hawkeye also. My maybe list includes Blood Queen vs. Dracula 1, Spider-Woman 5 and Princess Leia 1, with Princess Leia being the least likely.

    • I’ve managed to avoid all the Star Wars titles so far and Princess Leia will be added to the heap. I’d rather devote my money to some Independent series then the Marvel/Disney Star Wars juggernaut. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the movies and the animated shows but I draw the line at the comics. Thanks for sharing your pull list. It is always appreciated.
