On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 05/06/15

Radar Each week, countless titles see release from all the various comic companies out there. Some will be good, some will be bad, and some will be downright excellent. Of course, we don’t know which will be which but what we do know is which are our most anticipated. With that said, it is time once again to highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

Convergence: The Question #2
Convergence Question #2

Creative Team
Greg Rucka and Cully Hamner
Solicitation
“STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Renee Montoya’s final stand as The Question comes to a head as she helps Two-Face battle Flashpoint’s Harvey Dent…but will her world live on? This extra-sized issue includes a sneak peek at what’s coming up in the DC Universe!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
The first issue was the best tile of the first week of Convergence. With its conclusion we get more Montoya and more Montoya as the Question. Seeing her team-up with Two-Face is fantastic and I love the dynamic between the two. Add that to the talents of Greg Rucka and you get what is sure to be my Top Convergence title of this week as well.

Guardians Team-Up #5
Guardians Team-up #5
Creative Team

John Layman and Otto Schmidt
Solicitation

“The universe’s most powerful cabal of villainy has formed right under the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ noses–and they never noticed! This group of fowl (get it!) villains, is the Pets of Evil Masters! And they’re after world domination! Rocket must team-up with The Pet Avengers (much to his dismay) to face down the foes that no one else can (or will bother with) in this Earth-Shattering adventure that can only be told in the Mighty Marvel Manner!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Rocket teaming up with the Pet Avengers? Rocket teaming up with Lockjaw? Rocket teaming up with Lockheed? Rocket teaming up with Throg? I mean, seriously, how can anyone pass this one-and-done “tail” up?

Secret Wars #1
Secret Wars #1
Creative Team

Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic
Solicitation
“The incursion is happening! The Marvel Universe and Ultimate universe collide in this new 8-issue comic book series that will change everything you know about Marvel comics. Don’t miss this, true believers!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Marvel’s next big event officially starts here proper. The hype is large with this one, with Hickman haven built up to it since he took over the main Avengers title. Lately, the big event titles of Marvel have been a rollercoaster ride of quality though I did enjoy Hickman’s Infinity event series. This first issue will go a long way in telling me if this latest event is worth following or worth skipping for sure.

Spider-Gwen #4
Spider-Gwen #4
Creative Team

Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez
Solicitation
“Learn what really happened the day that Peter Parker died! Gwen comes face to face with Ben and May Parker!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
While so far Spider-Gwen ranks third in my female spider-title rankings, losing out to Spider-Woman and Silk, this issue with its flashback mechanic could produce the best chapter yet of this young series. Let the drama begin!

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #5
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #5
Creative Team

Ryan North and Erica Henderson
Solicitation
“The breakout character of 2015 continues her one-woman crusade against injustice and jerks in this standalone issue, a perfect jumping-on point for new readers! These TAILS of the Squirrel Girl will show you the Marvel Universe’s most powerful super hero from a bunch of brand-new perspectives, several of them QUITE ASTONISHING. This comic is actually a bunch of minicomics in one, giving it definitely the #1 most-comics-per-actual-physical-comic value in stores today!!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
If you like comics that bring a smile to your face and are just plain fun, this is the series for you! If you like comics that are deadly serious and all grim and moody, not so much.

Reid Vanier’s Top Pick
Convergence Harley Quinn #2
Convergence: Harley Quinn #2

Creative Team
Steve Pugh, John Dell, and Phil Winslade.
Solicitation
“STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy fight Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew – to the death!
Why He Is Looking Forward To It
Blame Grant Morrison, but I’ve fallen in love with Captain Carrot. He became an unlikely star in The Multiversity – one of his first major appearances in a very long time – and Morrison’s treatement of the character was spot on. The reason that my optimism carries over to the character’s upcoming appearance in Convergence is that Steve Pugh has also demonstrated a keen knack for cutting to the core of a character. Convergence: Harley Quinn #1 was absolutely heartbreaking. The incremental, hard-fought progress toward sanity and normalcy was absolutely palpable, and to watch it all undone – though it brought back Harley Quinn – was like watching Harleen die all over again. If Pugh can take that same loyalty to character and apply it to Captain Carrot, then the battle between the most cartoonish characters in the DC Universe (literally and figuratively) should be explosive and entertaining.

  1. I’m not looking forward to reading Secret Wars so much as I’m looking forward to seeing if it’s good. That and I’m both excited and nervous regarding the retooled Marvel Universe. So yeah, when I get back, I’ll be picking up my reserved copy of Secret Wars 1. I’ll also be picking up Amazing Spider-Man 18, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman 7 and Wolverines 17 I might also pick up Swords of Sorrow 1 (the Dynamite Universe’s first major event comic), Of the bunch, I’m mostly looking forward to Wolverines because it’s getting close to the end of the series and Mr. Sinister is on a rampage.

    • “I’m both excited and nervous regarding the retooled Marvel Universe”
I’m really not that worried about how it will all play out. It isn’t going to be as drastic as what DC did with the New 52. Sure, some characters will be incorporated, others will be resurrected, but overall the history of the Marvel Universe will remain intact. At least that is what I believe.

      • I’m not terribly worried either, and it won’t be as drastic as DC’s reboot, but since it’s the company I read the most from, I can’t help but be concerned.
