My Favourite Covers
Okay, so our journey through the past is complete for this week but which covers reign supreme? For Detective Comics, the crown goes to: Detective Comics #259. And this year marks the start of some really out there covers including appearances by aliens, robots, and dinosaurs. I’m of a strong belief that none of these elements should ever have a home in a Batman story (well sometimes robots are okay) so it was a pretty hard year to pick a favourite. I went with this cover, which contained none of the above, a cover that marks the debut of Batman villain the Calendar Man. He’s definitely got a different look from what I’m accustomed to since back in the day he was more concerned about the seasons instead of particular days. His flaming suit really grabs your attention and Robin’s reaction is priceless as he holds out his hand to shield himself from the overwhelming heat emanating from this bizarre foe. My one question however is this: how come his hands aren’t burning up considering he is not wearing any gloves? A true mystery indeed. For Amazing Spider-Man, the title goes to: Amazing Spider-Man #226. This was a really hard year to nail down as well but this time the reason was there were just so many great covers that piqued my interest with this one holding the edge for several reasons. I love the perspective that the artist has used for the scene as it creates visual interest and really makes you feel that you’re hovering above the action. Peering over the edge of the building is none other than Black Cat who is ready to pounce on Spider-Man. Her iconic look is instantly recognizable and not being able to see her face only adds to this cover’s charm and mystery. Is she happy to see Spider-Man or angry? Also, I love how her shadow is represented by an arching black cat which mirrors her posture above and the cherry on top is the phrase “She’s Back–The Black Cat” which is written in white causing it to really pop off the page. A simply stellar cover that rises above the rest!
So that’s it for this week. Agree/Disagree? Which covers are your personal favourites from this week? Comment below!
