In Retroactive I’ll take you on a visual comic cover tour of the past covering all the covers for a particular series. Each entry will cover an entire year and I’ll always have one comic from DC and one comic from Marvel. At the end of each edition of Retroactive I’ll select my overall favourite cover for that year for each series. Last time on Retroactive we covered The Flash 1975 and Uncanny X-Men 1983. If you need a refresher, just click HERE. Below you’ll find the two series that I’m currently covering. Click on that specific logo to be instantly taken directly to that series. The last section is reserved for my Top Picks from each year. Click the logo or travel to the third page to view them.

I really like UXM # 186.
First of all, it’s not the same old “superhero vs villain” image: in this case we have Ororo sitting next to a man with an artificial leg, and both of them have a very calm facial expression.
And then you look behind them, and you notice a gorgeous background, formed by various purple clouds and a flaming sky.
There’s a third detail that won me over: the tagline “Lifedeath – A love story.” It makes me think that this time, instead of the same old “The X – Men save the day” story, we’ll get something totally different and unusual, that is to say an issue focused on Ororo’s private life.
As for the Flash, I agree with the cover you chose. Special mention for issue # 243, because of the perspective leaning to the left.

That use of colouring is fantastic and helps make a downright beautiful image.

Exactly, though the use of the term “lifedeath” has me truly puzzled. What could it mean? For me, my runner-up would be UXM Annual #8. Just something about this cover speaks to me.

And special mention for #239. The Flash robbing the Rogues? Say what? 🙂
Thanks, as always, for providing your selections!
Thank you as well for your replies! : )
So many fantastic covers to pick from! Well, I really liked The Flash ##242 with a mysterious woman just touching the ground and zapping the Flash and stopping him in his tracks. What a great cover and very mysterious as well. Uncanny X#Men #185 with Rogue having defeated Storm is another great cover, very dark and creepy as well.

Such a powerful foe and a great way to introduce her to the readers. Her effortless defeat of the Flash has me intrigued.

I agree that Rogue has never look so scary!
Thanks for sharing your choices.
Rogue is one of my fave characters in the X-Men, always like to see her on the cover of the comic.
