Welcome to the twenty-ninth edition of the Comic Connection! The main point of its existence is to share and discuss, to Connect through Comics. Its centrepiece is the Weekly Question, a question I will pose dealing with anything Comic related. Then I turn it over to you and to Twitter to offer any feedback/your opinion on the topic with your answers being featured on next week’s posting. I’ll also share some cool comic-related fan art along with links to my favourite blogs and people to follow on Twitter. With that said, let’s revisit last week’s question:

@paul_bowler: My top non-Batman & non-Spiderman villains would be… 1 Doctor Doom: The Fantastic Fours greatest nemesis is one of my favourite villains. He’s a genius. rules his own country, and his armoured suit makes him a deadly opponent. 2 The Rogues: I’m with you on this one. I’m a big fan of the Flash and his Rogues gallery is brilliant. So many great characters, I just had to included them in on group like you did. 3 Magneto: As a big fan of the X-Men this one is a given, so had to include him as well. 4 Bullseye: Again, I’m a fan of Daredevil so Bullseye had to go on my list. He is the villain who has caused DD so much pain and torment over the years, another fantastically dark and twisted character.
xmenxpert: The Red Skull’s always a good villain. Nazis make great villains, because you can hate them unreservedly. The Red Skull brings style to his evil. Magneto’s a great anti-villain – he’s a genuinely sympathetic character, and sometimes, it’s hard to argue that he’s wrong. Thanos, when written properly, is awesome. He’s a major powerhouse who can duke it out with Thor, but he’s also a genius. His nihilism makes him scary, as does the fact that he’s a huge, imposing, scary-looking man. And finally, the greatest villain of all: Lady Stilt-Man. Lady Stilt-Man is amazing, and the world needs more of her.

“Which B, C, or D-List villains would you like to see pop-up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s first season?”

It’s my fourth and final villain-centric edition of the Comic Connection and I could think of no better way to end it then tie it in with current events. Last Tuesday saw the debut of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and while the first episode was great, I left knowing that this show could be even greater. How could they accomplish this? By incorporating some villains from the Marvel Universe. Now I’m not expecting Dr. Doom, Red Skull, Enchantress, or anyone on their level. What I’m talking about is those villains that might struggle to find a significant role in a movie, those villains that would benefit from the increased time that an entire season would provide. Without further ado, here’s my Top 3:
Taskmaster:
Sometime villain, sometime anti-hero, fulltime badass, the Taskmaster is a character that is just screaming to be adapted. He has the ability to mimic the physical movements of anyone he witnesses (such as Captain America’s battle skills) and often uses these skills for his own benefit either to pull-off one of his countless mercenary jobs or as a trainer to impart this wisdom onto heroes and villains alike. Where the money is, the Taskmaster is sure to follow. At one point in the comics, Taskmaster also worked for Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. even and I think this would be the perfect way to introduce him: start him off as a S.H.I.E.L.D. instructor and have him turn rogue. His look may need to be altered but the one thing that shall remain constant is the fact that he is one hell of a character that deserves his time in the spotlight.
The Scourge:
A master of disguise, the Scourge is a vigilante that is dedicated to the assassination of super-villains. This is a character with a captivating look from his skull mask to his white trench coat, boots, gloves, pants, and fedora. This is a character that could be easily adapted and one that could also set-up a huge mystery element to the series. Who is the Scourge? It would be a question that could plague our heroes for quite a while until the eventual shocking reveal.
Madame Masque:
A former rich socialite and daughter of a master criminal, Whitney Frost had her faced scared after her plane crashed while fleeing a raid on Stark Industries. She would don a gold mask and continue her life of crime calling herself Madame Masque. Eventually she fell in love with Tony Stark but they had a falling out when her father perished due to a battle with Iron Man. With this back story in hand, we are off and running. How I’d like to see her debut is quite simple: have her pull off some elaborate crime and be thwarted by S.H.I.E.L.D. only to escape to fight another day. A few episodes later, the team would gain a new member, Whitney Frost in disguise, a fact that the audience would be in on the entire time, wondering what her end game is and when she will turn on our heroes. High-stakes drama and tension, combined with a great female villain would make for some highly entertaining TV indeed.

The Speech Bubble 
I’d like to see AIM pop up. MODOK would be cool, or Monica Rappaccini. The second Black Widow, Yelena Belova would be really cool. And, why not, Stilt-Man. Because he is just the most ridiculous concept. I’ll also say the Plunderer, as a way of bringing in the Savage Land and Ka-Zar, as a way of bringing in Bobbi Morse as an agent assigned to monitoring Ka-Zar.
AIM would be a great group to show up as would Hydra. MODOK would need some reworking for television but with the right idea he could flourish. I’m right there with you about including Mockingbird though. Have her debut here and then show up in the Avengers 2? The Marvel Cinematic Universe needs some more female power desperately!
Black Widow already makes Mockingbird redundant, so there’s no point in adding her to Avengers 2. Two sexy female spies who engage in martial arts combat isn’t the way to go. If they were going to have a character debut on Agents of SHIELD and transfer to Avengers 2, Carol Danvers would be a better choice. Introduce her on Agents as chief of security at a SHIELD installation that deals with extraterrestrial research, and possibly have her get her powers. Then she can show up in Avengers 2 as Captain Marvel. Though I think having her debut in her own movie would be better. The best option would be to give her a movie in Phase 3, and then have her show up in Avengers 3.
Don’t get me wrong. When I said she should show up in Avengers 2, I meant as a cameo, a nod to the show, maybe something similar to Maria Hill’s role in the first, not as an Avenger member.

Sadly I don’t think that is in the cards. I can 90% guarantee that she’ll show up in a movie first because debuting her on TV will make her less significant in my opinion. As for a solo movie first, I think she’s the type of character that needs an Avenger movie to raise her general public awareness first before we talk solo. Hollywood is freaked out by solo female superhero movies after all.
I agree with you, think Madame Masque would be a good Marvel villain for Agents of SHIELD, as would Taskmaster. I know Mystique is in the X-Men films, but she would also be a great villain for this show, and her shape shifting powers would keep the Agents of SHIELD on their toes.
A Mystique-like character would be great. I’m sure there’s some other Marvel shape changing villain they could pull from the Marvel pantheon. Great suggestion!
Cheers, think it would be great if mutants were also acknowledged by SHIELD, they must have noticed them by now, with the X-Men’s adventures ect.
If only their rights weren’t tied-up by FOX…
