On The Radar: Comic Book Coming Attractions 04/08/15

Radar Each week, countless titles see release from all the various comic companies out there. Some will be good, some will be bad, and some will be downright excellent. Of course, we don’t know which will be which but what we do know is which are our most anticipated. With that said, it is time once again to highlight the upcoming comics that I’m looking forward to the most, the ones that are On My Radar:

“STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! After a year living under the confinement of the dome, Stephanie Brown isn’t sure she wants to be Batgirl again. But when she’s attacked by Catman and Gorilla Grodd from the world of Flashpoint, she’s forced to put on the cape and cowl to fight alongside Red Robin and Cassandra Cain!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Anyone that knows me is completely aware of why I am looking forward to this issue: Stephanie Brown as Batgirl! Add the fact that Cassandra Cain and Red Robin (the pre-Flashpoint one who was heads above the current version) will be appearing and you get a can’t miss issue that will unleash my inner fanboy.

“STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Just as they’ve finally been reunited, the romance between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon is sentenced to execution by Flashpoint Hawkman and Hawkwoman!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Oracle! Gail Simone writing Oracle! Nightwing and Oracle in a relationship! These Convergence titles sure know how to deliver on what long-time DC fans have been wanting to see once again.

Convergence: The Question #1

Greg Rucka and Cully Hamner
Solicitation
“STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Two-Face is fighting another world’s Harvey Dent, and it’s up to Renee Montoya as The Question to help him beat the odds.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Greg Rucka writing Renee Montoya once again is a real highlight. Renee Montoya as the Question is yet another. Exploring the tumultuous relationship between Harvey and Renee is the final cherry on top for all those fans who have followed their interactions over the years.

“STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! The fastest family alive loses its powers as Wally West and his kids face an uncertain future while trapped away from home. Will they be able to outrun the chaos that follows the arrival of Flashpoint Wonder Woman? Plus, don’t miss the most unexpected Zoo Crew character of all!”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
Wally West! My favourite Flash is back! Why can’t Convergence last longer than two months? Tell me why!

Deadpool #45
Deadpool #45 (250th Issue)
Creative Team

Gerry Duggan and Salva Espin
Solicitation
“FINAL ISSUE! That’s right-if you add together all the Deadpool series (creatively) issue 45 is the big 250th issue of Deadpool! What better way to celebrate than to end the series? In our over-sized main story, ULTIMATUM comes at Deadpool for revenge, so he has no choice but to take them on-ALL OF THEM. Then, in an Infinity Gauntlet crossover, what would Deadpool do if he got the six gems from Thanos? Plus: a slew of stories showcasing Deadpool’s closest friends and allies by special guest writers! Also, SPOILER: Deadpool dies at the end of the issue.”
Why I’m Looking Forward To It
The only non-Convergence title featured in my Top 5, Deadpool stops the clean sweep from occurring. While I so wanted to list Convergence: Justice League because of the re-emergence of Jade and Jessie Quick, I could not deny the fact that this issue has my interest piqued. It is an oversized finale to Duggan’s run as well as an issue where Deadpool will die. How long he will stay dead is another matter, but I expect an amazing finale to end this latest volume of the series.

“STARRING HEROES FROM THE PRE-FLASHPOINT DCU! Two-Face is fighting another world’s Harvey Dent, and it’s up to Renee Montoya as The Question to help him beat the odds.
Why He Is Looking Forward To It
When Flashpoint changed DC’s continuity back in 2011, a number of developing characters and storylines were cut short. Unfortunately, this included characters introduced within the last decade. One of the most disappointing of these lost characters was Renee Montoya as the Question, a mantle she inherited from Vic Sage in the wake of Infinite Crisis back in 2006. As a character, Montoya breathed refreshingly new life into the Question which included a tumultuous relationship with the then-new Batwoman and an intense rivalry with Intergang and the Cult of Crime. Convergence may be a lot of things. In fact, it may end up being a lot of bad or average things. As far as events go, this appears to be little more than a stop-gap while DC moves from New York to Burbank; I highly doubt that any significant changes to continuity will come out of it. But what I am excited about is the chance to revisit a character like Montoya’s Question one more time, especially with writer Greg Rucka returning to the character he reinvented. Pairing her with Two-Face in Gotham City certainly promises to stay true to the roots of both characters – a gritty crime drama set in one of the most notoriously corrupt cities in the DCU. Add in the incursion of parallel versions of various characters, and this book could very well recapture the blend of realism and the supernatural that made audiences fall in love with Montoya’s Question the first time around.

  1. I’m not bothering with Convergence. Not just because I haven’t read much DC outside of the New 52, but mostly because I’ll be out of the country for a good chunk of it and trying to catch up after I come back could be a pain. Batgirl does look good though, so I’ll consider picking up a few trades if it’s well received.

I’m picking up Vampirella 11, All New Hawkeye 2, Angela: Asgard’s Assassin 5, Ant Man 4, Captain Marvel 14 and Spider-Woman 6. I’m not sure which is my most anticipated. I noticed you’re picking up Captain Marvel. So does that mean you might be using the crossover as a jumping-on point? She’s supposed to be returning to Earth afterward.

    • It will be interesting to see how they handle the trades for the event considering each series is only two issues long besides the main Convergence title. It is because of my love for the pre-New 52 that I am beyond excited.

“So does that mean you might be using the crossover as a jumping-on point? She’s supposed to be returning to Earth afterward.”
I’m undecided at the moment. It’s a shame that Secret Wars is ending the running narrative for the title in May, being replaced my a mini that isn’t on my radar. I may try out that Earth issue and see where it takes me after Secret Wars concludes.

      Thanks for sharing your pull-list!

      • Yeah, I haven’t decided what Secret Wars comics I’m picking up, and I should probably decide soon so that I can reserve them for while I’m out of the country.
